The Stars, currently third in the Western Conference with 79 points, stayed hot in their first game since the Olympic break with a 4-1 win over the Seattle Kraken in Dallas on Wednesday night.
“I thought we came out of the break pretty good. I thought there was a good feeling going into the game. I thought we pretty much picked up where we left off, which is nice,” Dallas coach Glenn Gulusan said. “I use the expression that I want to play with ‘a little cloth in my jersey.’ The physicality, emotion and other things that you need to win. I think those guys did that before the break and I think they brought that with them tonight.”
Wyatt Johnston scored twice, his 30th and 31st goals of the season, and Matt Duchene also had a goal and an assist.
Johnston’s second goal was a power play effort, giving him 19 power play goals. This broke the single-season Dallas Stars record held by Mike Modano.
“It’s a huge honor. That wasn’t exactly on my radar going into the season, but it’s really nice,” said Johnston. “Obviously (Mike Modano) has done a lot for this organization. Just seeing the statue out there, I think it’s a no-brainer. There are so many great players that have played in this organization and played for this team, so it’s really cool.”
The franchise record is Dino Ciccarelli’s 22nd from 1987-88, when the team was known as the Minnesota North Stars.
Duchene has a seven-game point streak (seven goals, 11 points, four assists).
The Predators also won their first game since a 4-2 home win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday night.
Nashville overcame a 2-1 deficit with three goals in the third quarter, putting the score at 1-1-1 in its last three games.
Ryan O’Reilly made it 2-2 with 3:44 left and Steven Stamkos added an empty-net goal.
“It was great to win,” O’Reilly said. “It wasn’t our prettiest game, but we found a way and that’s huge. We’re in this race and we need points. You want to come out and get a big win and we stuck with it.”
Matthew Wood tied the game at 2-2 with 7:12 to go in the third.
“It’s a big goal for (Wood),” Predators coach Andrew Brunette said. “He went down (for the Milwaukee Admirals of the National Hockey League) and played a little bit, and I thought he performed well all week. I thought he had a good week of practice. He’s going to be a really important part of this. I like the anticipation he’s making right now and it was nice to see him score a goal.”
Stamkos’ goal was his 611th career goal. This puts him alone in 19th place on the all-time list, surpassing Bobby Hull with 610.
Filip Forsberg also scored for Nashville. It was his 25th goal and he has achieved that goal nine times in his career. This is the second highest record ever for a Swedish-born player. Mats Sundin has done it 15 times.
