Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images With the shutdown looming, the WNBPA Executive Committee declared that players were united and continuing to push for a “transformative CBA” agreement with the league.
The seven-member committee issued a signed statement on revenue sharing, further supporting the survey results the union shared in an Instagram post Wednesday. The committee said a league proposal to split net revenue 50-50 was shared with players, but only 15% of total revenue. According to the survey, 84% of players “disapprove of the 15% and want the union to continue negotiating,” the commission said.
“The goal of the league and teams in all CBA negotiations is to divide players,” the statement said. “These negotiations are no different. We are united and focused on delivering a transformative CBA for all members of this union, and we remain committed to the negotiations as far as they can go.”
The players gave a seven-member committee executive powers to strike ‘when necessary’. However, most of the players who commented on the record point to their desire to go on to play a full season and not give up any games.
Several players, including committee members Kelsey Plum and Breanna Stewart, said Monday they are awaiting additional proposals from the league as the March 10 deadline approaches. Rather than risk delaying the start of the regular season in May, the league set that date as the deadline for finalizing the new CBA.
Stewart was also one of the authors of a letter sent Monday to union executive director Terry Jackson, which multiple media outlets reported cited “serious concerns” about the players’ association negotiations with minimal player involvement.
