WBC Recap: Ozzie Albies, Netherlands, Nicaragua advance to finals

Ozzie Albies hit a walk-off home run as the Netherlands won 4-3 over Nicaragua in a Group D match in Miami.

Albies was the star of the afternoon, going 2-4 with four RBI. Xander Bogaerts, Ceddanne Rafaela and Druw Jones also collected two hits each for the team.

Nicaragua took the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Jeter Downs hit a two-run home run to left field. The Netherlands continued into the bottom of the 9th inning, trailing 3-1. With two outs, Rafaela singled and Bogaerts doubled. With two players on, Albies came out to bat and finished the game.

Erasmo Ramirez got off to a quality start for Nicaragua, allowing one run and five hits in five innings. Relief pitcher Angel Obanda took the loss.

Japan 8, Korea 6

Seiya Suzuki had two home runs and four RBIs to lead Japan past South Korea in Group C action in Tokyo.

For Japan, Shohei Otani and Masataka Yoshida each added home runs. Suzuki, Ohtani, and Yoshida combined to record all eight team RBIs. Kikuchi Yusei got the start, allowing 3 runs and 6 hits in 3 innings, and Assuki Taneichi struck out the 7th inning to get the win.

Kim Do-young hit Korea’s lone home run. Bo-Kyung Moon added a double and two RBI. Jeong-hoo Lee recorded 2-5 RBI. Starting pitcher Ko Young-pyo allowed four runs and three hits in 2-2/3 innings.

Canada 8, Colombia 2

Michael Soroka got off to a strong start on the mound in Canada’s victory over Colombia in Group A action in San Juan.

Soroka allowed one run in three innings. Canada’s bullpen (Indigo Diaz, Noah Skirrow, Micah Ashman, Eric Cerantola and Phillippe Aumont) gave up just one run, two hits and two walks over six total innings. Offensively, Owen Caissie hit a two-run home run and Josh Naylor went 2-4 with an RBI single.

Colombia’s Austin Bergner took the loss, allowing two runs in two innings. Michael Arroyo and Harold Ramirez had two hits and one RBI, respectively.

Italy 8, Brazil 0

Sam Aldegheri took the mound and led his team to a victory over Brazil in a Group B game in Houston, striking out eight and allowing no runs over 4 2/3 innings against Italy.

Relievers Alec Jacob, Gordon Gracepo and Claudio Scotti completed the rout for the Italian national team. Dante Nori hit two home runs, and Dominic Canzone had one home run and four RBIs.

Brazilian starter Enzo Sawayama started the game with four scoreless innings. However, the bullpen could not stop Italy’s attack.
