Mandatory Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn Image Victor Wembanyama had 38 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots as the San Antonio Spurs opened a six-game homestand with a decisive 121-106 win over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday.
The Spurs have won two straight and 13th in their last 14 games. Two of those wins came against the Eastern Conference-leading Pistons.
San Antonio, second in the Western Conference, scored as many as 19 points in the first half and led 71-55 in the second half, setting the tone for the game. Detroit cut the deficit to eight points late in the third quarter with Cade Cunningham’s technical free throw.
The Spurs rebuilt the lead to 105-90 with 6:28 left on a dunk by Dylan Harper, and the Pistons never got closer to 10 points the rest of the game.
De’Aaron Fox had 29 points for the Spurs. Julian Champagnie had 16 hits and Stephen Castle finished with 11 points and 12 assists.
Cunningham had 26 points for Detroit, which recorded its second straight outing after falling behind 8-1.
Isaiah Stewart added 18 points, Duncan Robinson and Tobias Harris added 11 points each, and Ronald Holland Jr. and Javonte Green each had 10 points. Pistons’ Ausar Thompson was forced out of the game in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle and did not return.
The Spurs took a 10-2 lead after Fox’s 3-pointer, and the lead eventually widened to 17 points when Fox hit a 3-pointer with 32.2 seconds left in the first half.
Two free throws by Stewart cut Detroit’s deficit to 38-23 after 12 minutes of play. Fox scored 16 points in the period and Wembanyama added 12.
The Pistons got within nine points twice early in the second quarter before San Antonio rebuilt the lead to 17 on Fox’s running layup with 8:19 left in the half. Wembayama’s two free throws with 28.1 seconds left increased the lead to 71-52, but Harris’ 3-pointer in the second half cut the Pistons’ deficit to 71-55.
Wembanyama led all scorers with 24 points by halftime and Fox added 22 for the Spurs. Stewart led Detroit with 12 points in the first half, while Cunningham had 11.
