Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Image First-year Utah coach Alex Jensen took one look at the stat sheet Saturday after a 73-60 Big 12 Conference loss to Arizona State and found why his team fell short again.
“When your assist-to-turnover ratio is 1:1, it’s hard to win, especially on the road,” Jensen said. “I think it was one of the most selfish games we have played as a group this year. Our lack of passing let us down defensively.”
The Utes will try to address those issues Tuesday night when they welcome Colorado to Salt Lake City for their final home game of the season.
Utah (10-19, 2-14 Big 12) has had other issues besides inconsistent ball movement. The Utes made just 23 of 59 shots from the field and allowed the Sun Devils to shoot 49.1 percent, including 9 of 17 from the 3-point line. It was the Utes’ 10th loss in 11 games and their third straight loss since a 61-56 loss at West Virginia on Feb. 18.
Terrence Brown leads Utah’s offense with 19.7 points per game, and Don McHenry, one of two seniors to be honored before tipoff, is scoring 17.1 points.
Meanwhile, the Buffaloes (16-13, 6-10) will look to bounce back from a 102-62 humiliation at then-No. 5 Houston on Saturday. Colorado started the game on a 10-2 run and fell behind 55-29 at halftime, allowing the Cougars to shoot 59.6% from the field on the day.
Colorado coach Tad Boyle didn’t have to witness most of it, at least not all of it. He was ejected with two technical fouls with 3 minutes and 6 seconds left in the first half.
“I liked the way we started the game, but we couldn’t sustain it,” Boyle said. “It’s a great learning opportunity for our young people to see a top five team in the country.”
Freshman Isaiah Johnson leads Colorado with 16.4 points while Barrington Hargress adds 13.9 points.
The Buffs won an 85-73 home win over Utah on Jan. 7 behind Sebastian Rancik’s 19 points and Bangot Dak’s 16 points and 12 rebounds.
