US Deploys Marines, Warships As Iran Blockade Strait of Hormuz

TLDR:

  • US President Trump called for the establishment of a global coalition to ensure the security of the Strait of Hormuz against Iranian interference.
  • Iran will allow its selective deliveries while maintaining a barrier to enemy tanks and strategic equipment.
  • The US is deploying 2,500 Marines and the USS Tripoli to bolster its naval presence in the region.
  • The closure of the straits threatens the world’s energy resources and the millions of people who depend on the safe passage of cargo.

The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has raised tensions as the US calls on several countries to deploy warships. Iran maintains restrictions and allows selective transfers while threatening strategic disruption.

Trump calls for global naval support

US President Donald Trump stated that many countries are sending warships to keep the Strait of Hormuz open.

The announcement was made on Truth Social, which named China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom as potential participants.

He emphasized the “collective effort” along with the United States to keep the important waterway safe. Trump claimed that the US has completely destroyed Iran’s military capabilities.

However, he acknowledged that Tehran could still launch drones, mines or short-range missiles against ships in the strait. He promised continued US military operations along the coast to keep the passage open.

Alireza Tangsiri, head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Navy, said the strait remains under control, not militarily closed. He criticized the US claims of destroying Iran’s naval forces and escorting oil tankers as false.

The US is also beefing up its presence in the region with 2,500 Marines and the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli following CENTCOM approval. Trump stressed that nations connected to the strait must take responsibility and that the US should offer coordination and support.

Iran restricts the passage, putting the world supply at risk

Iran explained that the strait is closed only to tankers and ships that are considered enemy or allied with the enemy. Following direct talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, Indian-flagged ships carrying liquefied natural gas have received concessions.

Thus, Turkish-owned ships received limited permission after direct talks between Ankara and Tehran. Another 14 Turkish ships are still waiting for permission to cross the waterway.

These selective exceptions emphasize Iran’s control and retention of international leverage.

The closure threatens global energy and food security, as the strait handles a large portion of its oil, LNG and fertilizer reserves. India has invoked emergency powers to supply cooking gas to more than 333 million homes.

Tom Fletcher, the UN’s humanitarian chief, warned that millions of people would be at risk if they could not safely cross the border. Experts emphasize that Iran’s main leverage is not military, but economic.

Sometimes a strike or disruption is enough to stop insurers and shipping companies from transiting the strait. Trump’s call for coalition forces is intended to reassure markets, although no diplomatic agreement has yet formalized a multinational escort.
