Mandatory Credit: Steve Roberts-Imagn Images Tyler Tanner had a game-high 34 points, seven assists and five steals as he led No. 24 Vanderbilt to an 89-86 overtime victory over Ole Miss on Tuesday in Oxford, Miss.
The Commodores (23-7, 10-7 Southeastern Conference) improved on their potential NCAA Tournament seeding with a Quad 2 victory and their second win in their last five games.
The Rebels (12-18, 4-13 SEC) have not won back-to-back games since snapping a 10-game losing streak with Saturday’s win at Auburn.
Tanner opened the overtime scoring with a free throw after converting a 3-point play on a drive to the hoop, and the Commodores never trailed in overtime.
Ole Miss had a chance to tie the game with 18.9 seconds left on a pair of free throw opportunities from Ilias Kamardine after Vanderbilt’s Tyler Nickel committed a foul while rebounding a missed 3-point attempt. But Kamardine missed his second attempt, and the Commodores’ Jayden Leverett collected the rebound and called a timeout with 17.9 seconds left.
Tanner was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play and made both free throws with 16.9 seconds left.
Patton Pinkins’ 3-point attempt bounced off the rim in the final minutes. Tanner came out with a long rebound and dribbled it over in the final seconds.
Duke Miles and AK Okereke each had 16 points for the Commodores. Vanderbilt’s Devin McGlockton fouled out after grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.
Pinkins led the Rebels with 16 points and went 9-for-10 from the free throw line, missing his final attempt. Camardin scored a total of 14 points and 7 rebounds, and AJ Storey also scored 14 points.
Malik Dia gave Ole Miss 11 points, but was fouled after Vanderbilt challenged the play, which led the referees to call Dia a flagrant foul after a review. Dia snatched the leg of Okereke, who lost the ball, and Miles picked it up with 41 seconds left in the second half and hit the game-winning jumper.
Miles almost gave Vanderbilt a win in regulation when he drove to the rim with five seconds left, but missed a reverse layup attempt.
