Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Toronto FC completed the signing of U.S. men’s national team striker Josh Sargent on Friday.
Sargent, 26, joined EFL Championship side Norwich City for a fee of up to $27 million, one of the highest transfer fees in MLS history.
He will occupy a Designated Player spot and is under contract through the 2030-31 MLS campaign.
“We are very excited to welcome Josh to Toronto FC as the foundation of what we have been building here at the club since last summer,” said general manager Jason Hernández. “He has high-level experience in the most powerful league in the world and, at just 26 years old, he has international pedigree. He is a proven goalscorer with the winning mentality and intelligence to lead our attack for years to come.”
Sargent appeared in 240 games for Norwich (2021-25) and Werder Bremen (2018-21) in the German Bundesliga, scoring 71 goals and 24 assists.
Toronto received up to $725,000 in general allocation money and a right of first refusal from St. Louis City.
“I’m excited to join Toronto FC and begin a new chapter of my life with my family in Toronto,” said Sargent. “I would like to thank everyone at the club for believing in me and for all their support throughout the process of making this move possible.
“From our initial conversations with Toronto FC, what excites us most about this project is our ambition to be a competitive and winning team. We can’t wait to get out there and play in front of all our fans at BMO Field.”
Internationally, Sargent played in 29 games for the United States national team, scoring five goals.
Toronto opened the 2026 MLS regular season with a 3-2 loss to FC Dallas last Saturday. The Reds visit the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night.
