Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Image Tomas Hertl scored a 4-on-3 power play goal 2:11 into overtime as the visiting Vegas Golden Knights rallied from a two-goal deficit in Game 3 to beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 on Wednesday.
Hertl received a pass from Mitch Marner at the bottom of the right circle and then buried a spinning wrist shot past goaltender Cam Talbot’s blocker and inside the far left post for the game winner.
The goal came 19 seconds after defender Simon Edvinsson was sent into the box for cutting Noah Hanifin in front of the crease.
Marner finished with a goal and two assists, Hertl had a goal and an assist, and Reilly Smith and Ivan Barbashev also scored for Las Vegas, which snapped its third straight loss. Rasmus Andersson had two assists.
Adin Hill made 23 saves for the Golden Knights, who played their second straight game without captain Mark Stone (upper body).
Alex DeBrincat and Edvinsson each had a goal and an assist, while Emmitt Finnie also had a goal for Detroit. Talbot made 21 saves.
Barbashev grabbed Andersson Tip’s rebound in the middle of the third quarter and narrowed the gap to the Golden Knights to 3-2 with a Hanifin point shot.
Deployed in front of the crease, Marner drilled a pass from Hertl over Talbot’s right pad to tie the game with 3:24 left in regulation, setting the stage for overtime.
Vegas took a 1-0 lead at 1:50 of the first period. Marner passed behind the net to Smith in the bottom of the left circle, where he fired a wrist shot past the blocker’s side of Talbot.
Detroit tied the game at 5:58 of the first on Finnie’s wrist shot from the right circle past a Marco Kasper screen that beat Hill on the glove side.
The Red Wings scored two goals in 59 seconds just before halftime to take a 3-1 lead.
Edvinsson scored the first goal, scooping up a loose puck in the high slot and firing a wrist shot past Hill’s glove side and into the top right corner. DeBrincat scored his team-leading 32nd goal after a Las Vegas turnover, sending a shot from the top of the left circle past Hill’s glove side.
