VANCOUVER — Jesper Sorensen doesn’t believe one loss will redefine the Vancouver Whitecaps.
But Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders made it difficult for the Major League Soccer team to pursue its goal of reaching the CONCACAF Champions Cup finals.
Paul Arriola scored a pair of goals and Paul Rothrock came off the bench to round out the scoring and give the Sounders a 3-0 lead in the two-game best-of-16 series.
It was an unusually sloppy game for the Whitecaps, who controlled 64.5 percent of possession but looked out of sync, missed passes and made several defensive mistakes.
“I think we had a lot of turnovers and had to sit back and not get the flow of the game, and Seattle did a good job of getting through us in a few situations in the first half,” Vancouver coach Sorenson said.
“We made some big mistakes that put us in a very difficult situation.”
Now the ‘Caps will look to regroup before heading to Spokane, Washington, where the Sounders will host the back end of the series on Wednesday.
“We were a good team three hours ago and we are still a good team. And the players are good, good players. Of course we will be stronger when we come back,” Sorensen said.
“We know we have to do something special, and maybe we think we can do it.”
Seattle looked dangerous early Thursday and found the net just before halftime.
Jesus Ferreira rushed into the Vancouver zone and ‘Caps defender Mattias Laborda couldn’t catch him. The Sounders forward slipped a pass to Arriola, who fired home a shot in the 45th minute to put the visitors up 1-0.
Vancouver’s key piece was not on the field to start the second half as reigning MLS Defender of the Year Blackmon was replaced in the lineup by Canadian Ralph Priso.
The American centre-back walked to the sideline after the game started wearing what appeared to be an ice pack on the back of his right leg. It was later announced that he had left the game due to calf tightness.
The ‘Caps continued to dominate possession early in the second half, but it was the Sounders who scored in the 58th minute.
Defender Nouhou Tolo sent the ball in and Takaoka blocked it, but the ball bounced off the keeper, hit the leg of Arriola and went into the Vancouver goal to give Seattle a 2-0 lead.
The play was reviewed on video for possible offsides and the officials ruled the goal was valid. Many in the announced crowd of 12,446 at BC Place expressed their disagreement with loud boos.
Arriola, 31, started his first game Thursday since missing last season with a knee injury.
“Probably the storyline of the day is Paul Arriola. It’s been a year and a day since he tore his ACL. What a way to come back and start again,” Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer said.
“It wasn’t just a goal, but there were a lot of good football plays – his skilful play, his clever defense, the assist for Nuhu – and the football experience helped us in this game. So Paul had a really, really good performance and he scored a few good goals.”
The Caps came close to a deficit in the 68th minute when Laborda hit a header and Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei made a diving stop. The ball bounced to Friso, who lifted it over the crossbar.
The Sounders capitalized on a counter, going upfield at a brisk pace before Rothrock, who came on for Arriola, fired a shot from the side of the net to make it 3-0 in the 62nd minute.
Vancouver continued to apply pressure and made a series of substitutions in hopes of sparking an attack, but were unable to mount a rally. The result marked the club’s first loss of 2026 after the ‘Caps went undefeated in their first five games of the campaign (4-0-1).
“We, including myself, were not good enough in everything: quality, communication, etc. So we have to learn from that,” Takaoka said.
The Whitecaps advanced to the round of 16 after beating CS Cartagines of Costa Rica 2-0 on aggregate in their opening match of the tournament. The Sounders were the 2026 League Cup winners with a first-round bye.
The winner of the series will face either MLS team Cincinnati FC or Liga MX club Tigres in the quarterfinals.
The Caps and Sounders are scheduled to return to MLS action on Sunday, with Vancouver visiting Minnesota United and Seattle visiting the San Jose Earthquakes.
