Mandatory Credit: William Purnell-Imagn Image Diego Rossi scored in the 82nd minute on Saturday night to help the visiting Columbus Crew salvage a 2-2 draw with Sporting Kansas City.
Rossi took advantage of defender Wyatt Meyer’s failed clearance. Wyatt Meyer attempted to head a cross pass away from danger, but instead delivered the ball directly to Rossi. Given time to decide and fire the ball, Rossi curled goalkeeper John Pulskamp’s dart into the left corner for his second goal in as many games.
Wassou Abou Ali also scored for the Crew’s second straight game (0-1-1, 1 goal). Dejan Jobeljic registered a brace for Kansas City (0-1-1, 1 goal), giving them a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute when he collected a loose ball in the box and fired a shot past the legs of a defender rolling into the left corner.
Joveljic pulled his team level in the 48th minute, completing a beautiful counterattack. Jacob Davis attacked him right in front of the net, and Zobeljic fired a shot that goalie Patrick Schulte (2 saves) couldn’t stop.
After a slow start, Columbus finished the game with a slight advantage of 10-8 in shots and 5-4 in frames. Crewe had the ball 52.5% of the time and attempted 16 crosses, 11 more than Kansas City.
Both teams started the season with road losses last weekend. Columbus gave up a late goal against Portland and lost 3-2, and Kansas City made a mistake just before the end of the first half and lost 3-0 against San Jose, giving up two quick goals.
Kansas City played most of the first 30 minutes before Fullscamp made a shocking mistake in the 33rd minute of the first half. He tried to swat the ball off the ground and delivered a careless pass that Abu Ali was able to intercept, giving him an easy right-footed kick into an open net.
That play aside, Pulskamp (3 saves) may have been the difference in Kansas City getting at least a tie. Columbus created enough quality chances to have 3 1/2 expected goals, according to League Stats Services.
