The Mariners have re-signed Jacob Nottingham to a minor league contract.

The Mariners re-signed their catcher. Jacob Nottingham Nottingham is on minor league trades as indicated in the transaction tracker on his MLB.com profile page. It’s unclear whether the deal includes an invitation to big league camp for the 30-year-old.

Nottingham is a veteran of four MLB seasons, but has not appeared in the major leagues since the 2021 season. A once top-100 prospect who was first drafted by the Astros, he joined in 2015. Scott Kazmir After trading the Astros and A’s, it goes to the Brewers. Chris Davis A contract was signed ahead of the 2016 season. Nottingham lost some of his luster as a prospect during his time in Milwaukee, and primarily played as an up-and-down catcher for the Brewers from his MLB debut in 2018 until 2021, when he was waived by the Mariners. He soon returned to the Brewers via trade, but was eventually DFA’d by Milwaukee and then waived by Seattle for a second time later that year.

Nottingham, then 26, finished the 2021 season with a career slash line of .184/.277/.421 over 130 plate appearances in 54 MLB games, which remains his career slash line in the big leagues to this day. After being completely left off the Mariners roster in 2021, he bounced between the Mariners, Giants, and Nationals’ minor league systems and also enjoyed 44 games in the independent Mexican League in 2024. Nottingham has a generally solid .235/.321/.415 slash line at catcher in 293 career minor league games. However, those numbers are somewhat inflated by years spent in the Pacific Coast League and Nottingham’s 2025 campaign left much to be desired. He appeared in just 17 games for Tacoma last year with the Mariners, and in limited opportunities he struggled to hit a .193/.277/.298 slash line.

Given Nottingham’s limited playing time last year and the struggles he had when he got on the field, it’s hard to imagine him being a significant part of the backup catcher conversation in Seattle. carl rowley Of course, he is the undisputed number one catcher not only in the club but in all of baseball. The Mariners are planning: Andrew Knizner This year we got Raleigh back on our feet Johnny Pereda He is also included in the 40-man roster. Mitch Garber, Brian O’Keefeand jackson ritz All are in camp as non-roster invitees. Some of these depth options have opt-outs built into their contracts, and if they don’t make it to an MLB club, they could look for greener pastures elsewhere. Nottingham is a place where he could emerge as a depth piece who is familiar with the organization and can serve as a veteran mentor for Triple-A pitchers.
