The Maple Leafs’ $92 million forward takes Toronto’s situation bluntly.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ playoff hopes are fading with each loss in the final game of the 2025-26 NHL season. Forward William Nylander recently shared his honest thoughts on the team’s situation.

Nylander spoke with reporters in Montreal before Tuesday’s game against Canada. It was his first media session since the trade deadline, and he acknowledged that the current situation is difficult for the team.

“I mean, it’s hard to stay really optimistic in this situation, but yeah, try to get a win tonight,” Nylander said.

Toronto has a 27-26-11 record with 65 points this season. The team sits in seventh place in the Atlantic, led by teams like Buffalo and Tampa Bay. A seven-game losing streak has hurt the team’s playoff chances. They score an average of 3.14 goals per game. However, defensive issues continue to affect results.

Asked if this was just a one-time thing, Nylander, who signed an eight-year, $92 million contract, said he hopes the struggles don’t continue next season.

“Yes, I hope so. Otherwise, yes,” Nylander said.

Nylander also discussed the atmosphere inside the locker room.

“I think it was a pretty good thing,” Nylander said. “You know, there was a lot of frustration and everything in the beginning after the break, and now it’s not going to help with the frustration, so I think it changed the atmosphere in the locker room a little bit and made it a better environment.”

Nylander remains one of the Maple Leafs’ top offensive players. This season, he scored 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 47 games. He also leads the team in assists and total points.

So obviously Nylander remains an important part of Toronto’s offense moving forward.
