Mandatory Credit: Terrence Lee-Imagn Image Mark Scheifele scored his 28th goal of the season with 2:54 left in overtime as the Winnipeg Jets began an eight-game homestand with a 3-2 comeback win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
Longtime Chicago great Jonathan Toews fought to keep the puck in the zone and Dylan Samberg stole the puck from the Blackhawks moments later and fed Scheifele, who beat Spencer Knight low toward his glove for the winner.
The goal capped a mad scramble to close out the contest for Winnipeg, who were in overtime for the fourth straight game after going 1-0-2 through three games on the trip to California.
The Jets are 4-10 in overtime this season and 3-8 in 3-on-3 games.
Samberg, who finished with a goal and an assist, scored his first goal of the season 3 minutes and 59 seconds into the game on 4-on-4 action to give Winnipeg, who won for the fourth time in the last 11 contests (4-3-4), an early advantage.
Kyle Connor sent the puck to Scheifele, who found Samberg moving away from his defenseman for the opening score.
Teuvo Teravainen tied the game with a power-play goal with 1:12 left in the first quarter for Chicago, which lost for the ninth time in its last 11 games (2-3-6).
Winnipeg’s Gabriel Vilardi was credited with a four-minute double minor against a stubborn Alex Vlasic. On the ensuing power play, Connor Bedard found Frank Nazar, who eventually sent the puck to Teravainen up the middle for the finish.
It was the third goal in the last two games for the Finnish center, who had just won a bronze medal at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
No goals were scored in the second period, although Bedard tested Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck several times. The reigning Hart Memorial Trophy winner stopped Bedard at the door several times. He also denied Ilya Mikheyev’s breakaway midway through the period, making 18 saves.
Ryan Greene beat Hellebuyck 32 seconds into the third quarter. He took a pass from Bedard and finished over Hellebuyck’s left shoulder.
The Jets nearly tied the game with a minute left in regulation after pulling Hellebuyck, but Gabriel Vilardi’s shot and the ensuing scramble were both denied by Knight, who made 29 saves.
Cole Perfetti took a pass from Scheifele with 39 seconds left and sent a wrister past Knight.
After assisting the previous two goals, Scheifele took over the team lead in goals with the winner. He was tied with Connor at 27 each.
