Bo Horvat scored the overtime win as the visiting New York Islanders beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1 on Saturday night.

Horvat scored his 27th point of the season at 4:20 of overtime, putting a backhand between the legs of Yaroslav Askarov on a break.

Tony DeAngelo scored in regulation for the Islanders, who avoided a three-game losing streak this season and improved to 9-0 in overtime.

Ilya Sorokin made 30 saves in eight career games with the Sharks, improving to 5-0-3.

Maclean Celebrini scored in regulation and Askarov stopped 32 shots for San Jose, which has dropped consecutive games in overtime.

With less than a minute left in the third on the Sharks’ power play, Will Smith took a Celebrini feed on a partial break, but Sorokin got his glove on the shot.

Colin Graf had a good opportunity for the Sharks with 1:36 left, but couldn’t get his backhand between Sorokin’s pads.

The Islanders had plenty of opportunities to take the lead early in the third, outscoring the Sharks 7-2 in six minutes.

Horvat had a lone shot and a rebound in the fifth minute against New York, but Askarov was in position to close the door.

The Islanders opened the scoring at 11:37 of the first period when DeAngelo beat Askarov with a shot from the point for his fifth of the season.

Celebrini tied the score at 1-1 33 seconds into the middle frame, piping a Smith feed past Sorokin for his team-leading 32nd, extending his point streak to five games (four goals, four assists).

The goal earned Celebrini 89 points, tying him with Steve Yzerman for 9th most points in a teenage season.

Saturday’s game was the second and final meeting between the Islanders and Sharks this season. New York visited San Jose 4-3 on October 21st.
