Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Image Simon Holmstrom remained perfect in overtime against the New York Islanders when he scored with 3:12 left in overtime and pulled off another comeback win over the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 on Saturday night.
Islanders defenseman Tony DeAngelo skated deep into New York territory before firing a pass to a wide-open Holmstrom at the Blue Jackets’ blue line. Holmstrom broke through Jet Greaves and went for a forehand that beat Greaves over his blocker.
Anders Lee, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Scott Mayfield also scored for the Islanders, who have won their fourth straight game since falling behind 2-0 and improved to 8-0 with a game decided in overtime. Three of New York’s last four wins have been comeback wins.
Goaltender Ilya Sorokin made 27 saves for the Islanders.
Isaac Lundestrom, Mason Marchment and Adam Fantilli scored for the Blue Jackets, who have lost two straight (0-1-1) following a seven-game winning streak. Greaves recorded 22 saves.
Lundestrom won a faceoff against Casey Cizikas to begin a sequence that ended in a deflection just 2:30 into the match. Miles Wood picked up the puck and fed the ball to Dante Fabbro, and as he and Cizikas glided across the crease, Lundestrom’s shot sent the puck trickling through Sorokin’s legs.
The two teams combined for five goals, two ties and one lead change during a chaotic second period.
The Blue Jackets doubled their lead at 3:58 when Zach Werenski’s ice pass just grazed Charlie Coyle’s stick and Marchment’s shot flew over the shoulder of Sorokin’s stick.
The Islanders began their comeback down three goals in less than six minutes of the second half.
Greaves got his glove on Mayfield’s shot and Lee put the rebound back in with 8:23 left. Pageau tied the score just 22 seconds later when his shot bounced off the sticks of Greaves and Fabbro, then off Pageau’s stick and into the net.
Mayfield scored his first goal since Dec. 16 in similarly unorthodox fashion with 2:50 left. His shot clattered into the crease and hit Werenski, who was fighting for position with Islanders center Bo Horvat.
Fantilli tied the score with 1:02 remaining when he redirected Werenski’s shot from above the left faceoff circle.
