Jimmy Snuggerud had one goal and one assist while Dylan Holloway had three assists for the Blues. Dylan Holloway reacted to seeing two key players traded earlier in the day following a three-game winning streak.
St. Louis goalie Jordan Binnington made 23 saves.
Macklin Celebrini and Kiefer Sherwood ended the Sharks’ three-game winning streak, but they still finished two points behind the Seattle Kraken for the Western Conference’s second wild card spot. San Jose also has one game ahead.
Sharks goalie Alex Nedeljkovic, who signed a two-year, $6 million extension contract this morning, blocked 11 shots.
Ahead of Friday’s trade deadline, the Blues traded captain Brayden Shen to the New York Islanders and defenseman Justin Faulk to the Detroit Red Wings. Forward Jonathan Drouin, acquired from the Islanders, and defenseman Justin Holl, acquired in a Detroit trade, both did not play.
The Blues responded by winning against the up-and-coming Sharks despite two surrenders.
Thomas, who had been the subject of many trade rumors, earned the win 54 seconds into overtime. He was credited with a goal when Philip Broberg’s shot hit the crossbar, bounced off Thomas’ skate and into the net to end a back-and-forth game.
Snuggerud opened the scoring at 6:55 of the first period. He weaved his way through traffic and fired a shot from the left faceoff spot that found the right spot between Nedeljkovic’s legs.
Celebrini buried a top corner wrist shot for a power play goal at 14:31 of the second period to tie the game with his team-leading 31st of the season.
Thomas restored St. Louis’ lead three minutes later, scoring in the first for his third goal in as many games since returning after missing 13 games due to injury and absence.
Sherwood drew the Sharks back again at 13:26 of the third period, tying a career high by converting a one-timer from the right faceoff dot for his 19th goal of the season.
The Sharks’ only trade before the deadline was moving defenseman Timothy Liljegren to the Vegas Golden Knights for a draft pick.
