Chicago’s defensive spending this week wasn’t random. This is a personnel pivot tailored to Dennis Allen’s favorite habits. That means disguising everything, moving everyone, and making the quarterback hold on to the ball long enough to regret it. Let’s start with subtraction. The Bears released Tremaine Edmunds for cap relief and he quickly joined the Giants. They’re also tempting Jaquan Brisker and Kevin Byard to take on bigger bags. Folks, this is not just a personnel change. Chicago has chosen a different type of secondary profile. Edmunds is a central product for many popular brands. The Bears are moving toward a more fluid build based on speed and action instructions rather than reactions.
Added defense:

Replacement speaks for itself. First, Devin Bush signed a three-year contract. Bush wasn’t here to sign a billboard. He’s here to run, pull the trigger, take cover and help Allen stay unexposed and aggressive. Pairing him with TJ Edwards would result in a much cleaner division of labor. A man with easy transportation (Edwards), a violent man in space (Bush).
Then you get a transfer with Alan’s traces all over it. Kobe Bryant signed a three-year, $40 million contract. The Bears didn’t just add a safety, they also added a chess piece. The Chicago Sun-Times cited Bryant’s versatility as a converted slot corner/safety type and tied it directly to Allen’s preferred mix-and-match coverage. ESPN came up with the same idea. With Kevin Byard III and Jaquan Brisker unresolved, Bryant’s man coverage and flexibility have become more important.
And that’s the quiet storyline underneath it all. Brisker is widely expected to leave, while the Bears have been linked with an effort to retain Byard. If Brisker walks and Byard signs elsewhere, Bryant becomes even more important because it leaves Allen’s defensive menu open. If Byard stays, Bryant will allow Chicago to rotate roles, disguise appearances and endure injuries.
The Bears also added DT Neville Gallimore up front. This is a rotating internal component that helps keep the offense on pass downs and enhances (much-needed) run stopping.
Friends, the Bears aren’t just putting together defenders. They are building a defense system that allows them to change their personality in an instant. This is Dennis Allen’s football. Chicago is progressing as they intended.
