This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season. TCU (21-10), the tournament’s No. 6 seed, has won by three points both home and away, the most recent being a 95-92 overtime win in Stillwater, Okla., on Feb. 14.
The win marked the beginning of a streak in which the Horned Frogs have won six of seven games. They have won their last five games in a row, the second-longest active streak in the league. The stretch included a 73-65 win over then-No. 10 Texas Tech on March 3 and closed the regular season with a 73-63 win over Cincinnati on Saturday.
TCU looks like a much different team than the one that lost four straight conference games in January. TCU guard Brock Harding addressed the team’s mentality in a recent interview with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
“The biggest thing is we don’t think about who we’re playing,” said Harding, who leads the league with 5.9 assists per game. “I think that’s what we’ve done a great job of as far as (deeper) into Big 12 play. We’ve played every game like we’re playing against whoever’s in front of us, not worrying about who we’re playing because we know we’re going to do the same thing we always do.”
From a scoring standpoint, David Punch has been the most consistent option for TCU. He leads the team with 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. But Xavier Edmonds, who averages 6.6 rebounds, has led the team in scoring in three of the last five games, and Jayden Pierre had a team-high 18 points against Cincinnati.
Oklahoma State (19-13), the tournament’s 14th seed, won two of its last three games to remain in first place at the time. Earlier this month, No. 7 Houston fell 82-75.
Oklahoma State’s Anthony Roy scored 24 points and Christian Coleman had 17 points and 14 rebounds in a 92-83 first-round win over Colorado, the tournament’s 11th seed, on Tuesday.
“We’re excited to advance in the tournament,” Cowboys coach Steve Lutz said. “This is another step forward for the program. More importantly, I am proud of their fight and composure.”
TCU received a first-round bye.
