On day 17 of the war in the Middle East and as missiles and drones continue to fall, the president of the United States has done a 180 degree turn in need of help from his friends and allies. Trump is now calling for a coalition to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. The US attacks on Iran’s Kharg Island on Friday the 13th sent a message to Tehran, but did not eliminate the potential threat to shipping entering and leaving the Persian Gulf. For Trump, this call to stay united is something of a change of course. On March 7, Trump told US broadcaster CBS that it is a little late for the UK and other countries to send ships. He did not need British help to win his war. Now, Trump is asking NATO allies to join him in the war that began on February 28 without consulting them. There is a common interest in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. But would it even be at risk if Trump hadn’t started the whole crisis?
