Spring Training Recap: Leo De Vries doubles deep to beat A’s Dodgers.

Top prospect Leo DeVries hit two home runs, including a grand slam, to lead the Athletics’ spring training squad to an 11-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in Mesa, Arizona.

De Vries, a 19-year-old switch-hitting shortstop, also hit a two-run homer in the fourth, giving the Athletics their first six RBIs of the spring. Andy Ibanez went 4-for-5 with a double and Clark Elliott hit a game-tying single to top the A’s four-run eighth inning.

Andy Pages and Alex Call hit solo shots for the Dodgers, who were 9 for 14 for the Athletics. Starter Justin Wroblewski pitched three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Twins 7, Phillies 6

Gabriel Gonzalez, Minnesota’s No. 7 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, hit a walk-off sacrifice fly as Minnesota beat Philadelphia in Fort Myers, Florida.

Ryan Kreidler hit a game-tying solo homer in the seventh, Cody Clemens (2-for-3) added a double and a two-run triple for the Twins, who took a 3-1 lead in the third, and the Phillies scored four runs in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead.

Simeon Woods Richardson got the start for Minnesota and had an outstanding performance, allowing one run and one hit over four innings while striking out five. Marco Raya was the winning pitcher, allowing one walk in a scoreless ninth inning.

Otto Kemp led off the scoring with a home run in the second inning and added an RBI single for Philadelphia, which allowed starter Alan Rangel to give up three runs on six hits through three frames.

Rays 9, Braves 8

Tampa Bay scored two runs, including the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning, in Port Charlotte, Florida, to defeat Atlanta and achieve a come-from-behind victory.

The two teams combined for six home runs and six doubles to score 11 runs in the first two innings. Ben Williamson and Brayden Taylor came out for the Rays, who held starter Logan Workman to five runs on eight hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Ben Gamel hit his fourth home run of the spring in the Braves’ four-run first inning, and Kyle Farmer, Luke Williams and Jair Camargo all also touched for a road squad loaded with prospects. Bryce Elder allowed five runs in 3 1/3 innings.

Nationals 3, Astros 1

19-year-old prospect Ronny Cruz broke the deadlock with a two-run home run as Washington beat Houston in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Nationals tied all three of their hits with their seventh three-pointer, and six pitchers combined for three hits and one run. Starting pitcher Andrew Alvarez gave up only one hit, struck out five, and allowed no runs in four innings.

Cam Smith scored the Astros’ lone run with a home run in the fifth inning and finished with two of Houston’s three hits. Hunter Brown had nine strikeouts in four no-hit frames before JP France took the loss.

Pirates 9, Red Sox 7

Billy Cook and Nick Yorke each homered and drove in three runs in Pittsburgh’s win over Boston in Bradenton, Florida.

Cook (3-for-3) finished the cycle with three hits, and Marcell Ozuna had two hits and two runs scored for Pittsburgh. Carmen Mlodzinski gave up five hits over three innings but allowed only one earned run to earn her second win of the spring.

For the Red Sox, Mickey Gasper went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and Abram Liendo had a two-run double. Starter Jake Bennett took the loss, allowing two runs and two hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Blue Jays(ss) 1, Orioles 0

Jesús Sanchez’s third-inning RBI single provided the only runs in Toronto’s split-squad victory over host Baltimore in Sarasota, Florida.

The Blue Jays’ No. 3 prospect, shortstop Arjun Nimmala, went 2-for-2, stole a base and allowed one run. Starting with Cody Ponce’s three no-hit innings, five Toronto pitchers combined for five hits and no runs with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Taylor Ward’s double was Baltimore’s only extra-base hit, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. Jackson Kowar was the losing pitcher, allowing two hits and the bases loaded during the inning.

Blue Jays(ss) 5, Tigers 0

Addison Barger scored Toronto’s first three runs in a win over Detroit in Dunedin, Fla., with back-to-back home runs and a two-run single in the inning.

After 3 1/3 scoreless frames in Kevin Gausman’s start, seven different Blue Jays pitchers recorded eight strikeouts and two walks to complete Toronto’s second scoreless pitch of the day. No. 13 prospect Josh Kasevich added an RBI double.

Colt Keith was 2/3 leading the Tigers, managing seven singles. Starter Brian Sammons allowed four runs on two hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.

Marlins 2, Cardinals 2

In the 7th inning of the final tie held in Jupiter, Florida, an error by St. Louis first baseman Dakota Harris resulted in Miami’s tying goal.

Griffin Cornyn homered and Graham Foley (2-for-3, triple) accounted for the Marlins’ three hits. Braxton Garrett, who has been sidelined since June 2024 due to Tommy John surgery, allowed one hit and one run in three innings in his second spring start.

Pedro Pages’ double was the Cardinals’ only extra-base hit. Andre Palante (4 innings, 1 run on 2 hits, 3 strikeouts) started the 3-hit performance of the six St. Louis pitchers combined.

Mets 10, Yankees 4

The Mets’ second-ranked prospect, Carson Benge (2 hits in 3 at-bats), won a complete victory in the New York rivalry game held in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The Mets scored three runs in both the second and third innings to escape with a 2-0 lead. Nine Mets got hits as Brett Baty and Tyrone Taylor hit consecutive RBI doubles in the third inning. Freddy Peralta earned the win, striking out four and allowing two runs in three innings.

George Lombard Jr., the Yankees’ top prospect, scored the first run after hitting a two-out triple to left center in the first inning. Jasson Dominguez added a two-run hit. Offseason acquisition Ryan Weathers got off to a rough start, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits over two innings.

Athletics (SS) 7, Angels (SS) 4

Tommy White went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs to outscore the host Athletics’ split squad in a win over Los Angeles in Las Vegas.

Henry Bolt added a two-run home run and two doubles as part of a 4-for-4 performance for the Athletics. Starter Aaron Seabale allowed five hits and two runs over 3-2/3 innings, but struck out four and walked none.

The Angels’ Logan O’Hoppe hit a two-run homer off Sibale, and Oswald Peraza added a solo shot as part of a three-hit game. Starter Jack Kochanovic allowed three hits and one run in four innings.

Giants 9, Cubs 5

San Francisco hit five home runs, including three during a four-run sixth inning, against host Chicago in Mesa, Arizona.

Grant McCray and Jesus Rodriguez hit back-to-back home runs off Connor Schultz to open the sixth, and Buddy Kennedy added a two-run shot with two outs for a 6-5 lead. Eric Haase and Parks Harber also homered for the Giants. Landon Roof pitched three innings and allowed two hits and one run while striking out two.

Dansby Swanson went 2-for-2 with a triple and two runs scored for the Cubs, who got three RBI on a hit and groundout from Moises Ballesteros. Chicago’s bullpen day saw Caleb Thielbar, Phil Maton, Hoby Milner and Luke Little each pitch a no-hitter inning to start the game.

White Sox 5, Royals 4

Colson Montgomery and Jarred Kelenic homered as Chicago claimed a victory over Phoenix’s visit to Kansas City.

Kelenic and Luisangel Acuna each had two hits for the White Sox. Jordan Hicks pitched 1-2/3 innings and allowed two runs while walking four. Sean Newcombe, who is also competing for a rotation spot, allowed two runs and three hits in three innings.

Nick Loftin hit a two-run homer off Newcomb in the fifth inning as part of a 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs while batting leadoff. Starter Noah Cameron allowed three hits and struck out three in three innings.

Reds 13(ss), Diamondbacks 4

Cincinnati’s 14-hit offense produced four home runs as the hosts never trailed against Arizona in Goodyear, Arizona.

Will Benson, Tyson Lewis (2-for-2), Ryan McCrystal (2-for-2, 3 RBI) and Zavier Warren pitched deep for the Reds, who were up 5 runs in the top six. Brady Singer allowed two hits with three strikeouts over three innings.

Jordan Lawlar hit his third home run of the spring for the Diamondbacks, going 2-for-4. Ryan Waldschmidt went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Gino Groover contributed a pair of RBI doubles. Starter Dray Jameson was ejected after facing six batters and allowing three hits and one run.

Angels(ss) 10, Rangers 7

Los Angeles defeated host Texas in Surprise, Arizona, defeating Evan Carter’s grand slam in the first inning.

The Angels allowed three hits, three walks and a hit by pitch to go 6 runs and 7 hits to take an 8-6 lead. Chris Taylor, Donovan Walton and Christopher Harrelson each had two hits. Starter Victor Mederos allowed four runs, four walks and two hits in three innings.

Carter (2-for-3) gave the Rangers a 4-1 lead with his second home run of the spring. Josh Smith (2-for-2) hit a 2-run shot in the 6th inning. Nathan Eovaldi pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four.

Guardians 4, Rockies 4

After Dom Nunez’s RBI single gave Cleveland the lead in the top of the ninth, Scottsdale, Arizona’s Andy Perez responded with an RBI grounder in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game.

Tyler Freeman and Kyle Karros each had two hits for the Rockies, who had nine hits. Starter Iverson Castellano pitched two scoreless innings despite allowing three walks and one hit.

Starting pitcher Joey Cantillo allowed five hits and two runs with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings for the Guardians. No one had two hits as the Guards combined for nine walks, four singles and a Daniel Schneemann double.

Brewers 6, Mariners 3

Ethan Murray’s three-run home run in the fourth inning gave Milwaukee the lead against Phoenix’s visit to Seattle.

Jake Bowers added a solo shot and a double for the Brewers, while Andrew Bourne contributed two hits in four days. Starter Kyle Harrison allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) over three innings, while reliever Jacob Misiorowski pitched 3 1/3 innings with six strikeouts, two hits and one run.

Brennen Davis hit his fourth home run of the spring for the Mariners and Leo Rivas added a 2-run shot. George Kirby gave up two hits and one run with two strikeouts and a walk in the first three innings.

Padres 14, Reds(ss) 3

Gavin Sheets and Romeo Sanabria hit three-run home runs as host San Diego topped Cincinnati in Peoria, Arizona, with a nine-run eighth inning.

Jackson Merrill had two doubles and Jake Cronenworth had a triple as part of the Padres’ 10-hit attack. Logan Gillaspie pitched four innings, allowing no runs, allowing two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Reds prospect Chase Burns allowed four hits and four runs over 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Alfredo Duno hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to take a 4-2 lead.
