Spring Training Recap: Jorge Polanco, Francisco Alvarez go deep for Mets.

Jorge Polanco and Francisco Alvarez hit their first home runs of the spring for the New York Mets in a 6-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday afternoon in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Alvarez (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Polanco (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Brett Batty (2-for-3, 2 RBI) led the Mets’ 14-hit attack. David Peterson allowed only three hits, one run and two hits through the first four innings.

Nelson Velazquez scored for the Cardinals with his first solo impact. Victor Scott II was born in St. Louis added a double while recording just three hits. Starter Jared Shuster suffered the loss, giving up seven hits, including two home runs, and allowing four runs for the Mets.

Tigers 7, Red Sox 2

Riley Green hit a two-run homer off Sonny Gray in the second inning as Detroit beat host Boston in Fort Myers, Florida.

Wenceel Perez went 2-for-3 and Corey Julks came off the bench to score three runs with a two-run home run and a sacrifice fly. Starter Tyler Madden allowed just one run over 3 2/3 innings, but also walked three and allowed two hits.

Gray struck out four in four innings, but gave up three hits, two runs, and a walk to the Red Sox, who had only four hits on the day. Rookie outfielder Braiden Ward stole two bases to give his spring career total to 16 in just 35 plate appearances.

Astros 7, Orioles 6

With the bases loaded and one out in the 9th inning, Tyler Whittaker lifted a sacrifice fly to score Colin Price, and the home team, Houston, won a complete victory over Baltimore in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Orioles’ Coby Mayo went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and raised his spring training average to .500. That included a two-run home run off Astros starting pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. in the second inning. Mayo also stole a base. Starter Levi Wells gave up two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings.

McCullers pitched three innings, allowing three hits, two runs and one walk while striking out four. Cam Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Jack Winkler hit a bases-loaded double in the sixth to give Houston a 5-4 lead.

Yankees 4, Phillies 2

Jasson Dominguez and Spencer Jones hit solo home runs to help New York earn a victory over host Philadelphia in Clearwater, Florida.

Dominguez hit his second home run of the spring off Tanner Banks in the first inning, and Jones hit his fourth home run of the spring off Jonathan Bowlen in the second inning. Yankees starter Louis Gill struck out four and allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in 3 1/3 innings.

JT Realmuto went 2-for-3 with his first home run for the Phillies. Bryan De La Cruz also went 2-for-3 and drove in another run. Lou Trivino (0-1), the sixth of seven Phillies pitchers, took the loss after giving up two runs and two hits in the sixth inning.

Twins 6, Race 5

David Banuelos’ three-run double led visiting Minnesota to a six-run eighth inning past Tampa Bay in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Matt Wallner started the rally with his first home run of the spring as the Twins got five of his six hits in the eighth inning. Starter Joe Ryan pitched three innings without allowing two hits and two walks.

Rays starting pitcher Steven Matz pitched four scoreless innings with three strikeouts, one hit, and one walk. Kenneth Piper belted two doubles and had two hits, and Ray Delgado added two run singles.

Blue Jays 7, Braves 0

Dillon Jeong and six relievers combined for six hits and no runs during Toronto’s visit to Atlanta in Dunedin, Florida.

He struck out three and allowed two hits in three innings. Jeff Hoffman, Tyler Rogers, and Lewis Balland were among the six regular big league pitchers to record no runs. Riley Tirotta hit a solo home run and Brandon Valenzuela closed out the scoring with a three-run blast in the seventh.

Jose Azocar recorded the Braves’ only extra-base hit with a triple in the fourth inning. Prospect JR Rich allowed only one hit in four innings, but walked four and gave up two runs.

Nationals 7, Marlins 5

Daylen Lile and Brady House hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to spark Washington to a victory over host Miami in Jupiter, Florida.

Jonathan Thomas added a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tie and give the Nats the lead. Starter Foster Griffin allowed 4 hits and 1 run in 3 innings.

Marlins starting pitcher Yuri Perez struck out seven and walked two over three innings, but the only hits and runs he allowed were home runs to Lyle and House. Ethan O’Donnell hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning, and Jesus Bastidas added two hits and one of Miami’s four stolen bases.
