Spring training recap: Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer excels in spring debut

Max Scherzer pitched four hitless innings and four relievers allowed two hits and no runs as Toronto beat Philadelphia 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Clearwater, Florida.

Scherzer, 41, had one strikeout and one walk in his spring training debut. Chase Lee, Josh Fleming, Lazaro Estrada and Connor Siebold combined for five strikeouts and one walk.

Jonatan Clase scored the lone run on a fielder’s choice in the ninth inning, as the Phils failed to complete an inning-ending double play.

Prospect Andrew Painter pitched three shutout innings for the Phillies, allowing one hit and one walk. Relievers Jose Alvarado and Jhoan Duran each pitched one inning, each allowing one hit and striking out two.

Astros 5, Marlins 4

Colin Price singled and drove in Pascanel Ferreras as Houston left Miami in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Walker Janek hit a two-run home run for the Astros in the sixth inning off Cade Gibson, and Joey Loperfido went 2-for-2 with a stolen base. Starter Jason Alexander allowed two hits and two walks over three innings.

Marlins starter Chris Paddack also pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Outfielders Matthew Etzel and Brendan Jones each had two hits and Etzel drove in two runs.

Orioles (ss) 2, Braves 2

Baltimore rallied from a two-run deficit in the ninth inning when Jordan Sanchez hit a three-run hit for Venice, Fla., and 19-year-old Jaiden Lo Re hit an RBI single to tie Atlanta.

In the sixth inning, Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski hit back-to-back solo home runs to give the Braves the lead. Starting pitcher Grant Holmes pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts, three walks and two hits.

Cameron Weston struck out four for the Orioles and allowed only one hit and one walk over three innings of scoreless relief. Reed Trimble went 2-for-4 and led the rally with a double in the ninth inning.

Orioles(ss) 3, Twins 2

Heston Sjärstad hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning to help the Baltimore home team secure a victory over Minnesota in Sarasota, Florida.

Orioles starter Cade Povich allowed one run and one hit with one strikeout and one walk over 3-2/3 innings. Coby Mayo led off the win with a double in seven innings.

Twins starting pitcher Mick Abel gave up two hits and no runs over four innings while recording two strikeouts. James Outman went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two stolen bases, and Brooks Lee added two hits.

Red Sox 2, Rays 0 (6 innings)

As Boston dominated Tampa Bay in a game held in Fort Myers, Florida, Yohan Oviedo combined for three relief pitchers and allowed three hits and no runs.

Oviedo struck out four and scattered two hits over 3 1/3 innings. Relievers Wyatt Olds, Aroldis Chapman and Jack Kelly combined to allow one hit and one hit. Justin Gonzales knocked in Caleb Durbin for the only RBI of the game.

Rays starting pitcher Ty Johnson gave up one run over 2 1/3 innings while recording three strikeouts and two walks. Narciso Polanco hit a double with the only extra-base hit of the game.

Pirates 5, Tigers 3

Tom Harrington pitched four scoreless innings to earn the save as Pittsburgh never trailed against Detroit in Lakeland, Florida.

Mitch Jebb hit a triple and scored a run off the bench, and the Pirates improved their spring average to .200 with prospect Konnor Griffin going 1-for-4 with two strikeouts. Starter Hunter Barco allowed three runs and three hits in three innings.

Tigers starter Casey Mize gave up four hits and three runs (two earned) over 3 1/3 innings. Austin Slater hit a two-run double to lead off the scoring and Kerry Carpenter followed with a triple.

Mets 3, Cardinals 2

Wyatt Young’s 2-out, 1-run single in the 8th inning gave New York a victory over St. Louis in Jupiter, Florida.

Kyle Leahy pitched four perfect innings for the Cardinals, recording five strikeouts. Joshua Baez and Miguel Ugueto hit solo home runs to put St. Louis up 2-0, and Alec Burleson went 3-for-3.

Mets starting pitcher Senga Kodai gave up a home run over 2 2/3 innings while striking out two and allowing one more hit. Brett Baty went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and Mike Tauchman contributed with an RBI double.
