Rebilas-Imagn Image Athletics prospect Tommy White continued his spring pitching tear, going 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and seven RBIs in Friday’s 13-4 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers in Phoenix.
White, a second-round pick of the Athletics in 2024, has now hit four home runs and 13 RBIs this spring, the latter total tying him for the most in the major leagues with teammate Tyler Soderstrom.
The A’s, playing with a split squad, got six runs from Brewers starter Kyle Harrison (0-1). The right-hander struck out four, walked one and gave up a home run to catcher Chad Wallach. Most of the rest of the Athletics’ damage came from right-hander Mark Manfredi, who gave up four runs without allowing a run in the ninth.
Another 2024 draft pick, Lefty Gage Jump (1-1), got the start and pitched four scoreless innings for the Athletics.
Padres 13, Athletics (SS) 9
While one part of the Athletics was scoring 13 points, another part was giving up 13 points as San Diego rolled in Mesa, Arizona.
Marcos Castanon went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs, and Clay Dungan drove in the tying run and first run for the Padres, who drove in six runs and hit three home runs off Athletics starting pitcher Aaron Civale.
Civale allowed nine hits and struck out three over four innings. Nick Hernández (0-1) took the loss in relief. San Diego starter Michael King also took a hit, allowing 7 hits and 6 runs in 4 innings. He struck out five but also gave up three home runs. Former Cleveland Star prospect Triston McKenzie (1-1) earned the win, allowing one run in two innings.
Phillies 11, Orioles 8
A day after hitting his first home run of the spring season, Alec Bohm hit a two-run shot to spark Philadelphia’s home win over Baltimore in Clearwater, Florida.
Spring, who has a batting average of 0.375 and 9 RBIs this year, hit his first home run of the day in the first inning, giving the Phillies a 2-0 lead, and broke a 3-3 tie with his second two-run shot in the fifth inning.
The Orioles’ Samuel Basallo had a monster game, going 2-for-4 with a 2-run home run and 5 RBIs. In the 9th inning, Willy Vasquez added a solo shot.
Blue Jays 6, Twins 1
Dalton Barsho hit a two-run home run and a three-run shot as part of Toronto’s 3-for-3 performance in a win over Minnesota in Fort Myers, Florida.
Toronto pitchers held Minnesota to one hit despite allowing six hits and 10 walks, and rookie Eloy Jimenez added a solo blast. The Twins went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded 15 baserunners.
Alan Roden collected two hits and the Twins’ lone RBI, while Matt Wallner also finished with two hits. Minnesota’s first pitchers, Mick Abel and Jack Kent, combined to allow five hits and five runs in five innings.
Red Sox 7, Rays 6
Carlos Narvaez homered and drove in three runs as part of a 14-hit attack as Boston visited Tampa Bay in Fort Myers, Florida.
Jason DeLay broke a 6-6 tie with a solo shot in the seventh, and rookies Caleb Durbin and Nate Eaton each had three hits. Boston starter Johan Oviedo gave up his first run of the spring, allowing three hits and one walk in 3 1/3 innings.
Austin Overn hit a two-run shot and Jonny DeLuca had a pair of hits to lead Tampa Bay’s offense, while starter Drew Rasmussen limited Boston to six hits and one run over four innings.
Braves 7, Yankees 6
Maurico Dubon hit a four-run first inning home run, and then-host Atlanta held off New York’s ninth-inning comeback challenge in Northport, Florida.
Atlanta starting pitcher Didier Fuentes played sharply, striking out 5 batters in 3 innings. Kyle Farmer went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Ambioris Tavarez had 2 hits and two RBI as the Braves finished with 14 hits.
Garrett Martin hit a three-run homer in the fourth and ninth, but it wasn’t enough for the Yankees. Tyler Hardman added a pair of RBIs. Newly acquired Ryan Weathers endured a rough start, allowing seven hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Mets(ss) 8, Nationals 3
Nick Rosselli hit a three-run double in the eighth inning as New York earned a road win over Washington in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Five other Mets had RBIs, and starting pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. held the Nationals hitless through four innings, allowing just one walk and four strikeouts.
Dylan Crews and Nasim Nunez had RBI singles and Yohandy Morales lifted a sacrifice fly for Washington, but that limited them to three hits. Jack Littell, who signed with the Nationals earlier this week, pitched three innings and allowed three hits and one run.
Pirates 7, Tigers 5
Jostinson Garcia hit a two-run home run as part of Pittsburgh’s early offensive explosion against Detroit in Lakeland, Florida.
After a scoreless first, the Pirates scored two runs in each of the next three innings to build a 6-0 lead and held on while the Tigers chipped away. Starter Mike Clevinger pitched until the fifth inning, allowing one hit and two runs with four walks and five strikeouts.
Detroit starter Casey Mize, who gave up 12 runs (nine earned) this spring, allowed six runs and six hits in three-plus innings. Seven relievers limited Pittsburgh to one run. Parker Meadows’ two-run single in the fifth inning got the hosts going.
Cardinals 5, Astros 4
Colton Ledbetter hit a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to lift St. Louis from Jupiter, Florida’s visit to Houston.
The Cardinals, making the most of their five hits, hit back-to-back home runs by Blaydes Jordan and Ramon Mendoza in the fourth inning. The bullpen demolished the Astros after starting pitcher Kyle Leahy gave up four runs in four innings.
Christian Walker hit a solo shot and scored twice as part of a 2-for-3 performance for the Astros, who got a three-inning, one-run start from Kai-Wei Teng. Bryan Abreu, who will assume the closer’s role while Josh Hader is out, gave up two runs in one inning.
Marlins 1, Mets 0 (ss)
Christopher Morrell’s RBI single in the seventh inning broke a scoreless tie as Miami defeated host New York in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
Connor Norby finished 2-for-3 and scored on Morel’s hit, and starter Chris Paddack (1 hit in 3 innings) and six relievers combined for 5 hits and no runs.
In his second spring start, the Mets’ Kodai Senga pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts. Clay Holmes went 5 innings and gave up the final hit.
White Sox 4, Cubs 2
Left-handed pitcher Davis Martin (2-1) struck out four and gave up one hit over four innings as the White Sox defeated the Cubs in Phoenix.
Four White Sox pitchers recorded 13 strikeouts, one walk, and two unearned runs, holding the Cubs to five hits. Catcher Korey Lee went 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI for the White Sox.
Cubs starter Riley Martin (1-1) took the loss, allowing three hits and one run with two strikeouts over two innings.
Rangers 9, Rockies 4
Josh Smith hit a double and home run and drove in three runs as Texas defeated Colorado in Scottsdale, Arizona. As the Rangers scored seven runs in the third inning, leadoff hitter Brandon Nimmo also had three hits to start the game.
Colorado starting pitcher Jose Quintana suffered a lot of damage, falling behind 1-1 with 4 hits, 5 runs, 5 strikeouts, and 6 walks.
Jacob Latz overcame two first-inning runs and held the Rockies to three hits and two runs over four innings. He struck out six and walked three in earning his first decision win of the spring.
Angels 5, Guardians 2
Los Angeles beat Cleveland in Tempe, Arizona, on a two-run home run by Jorge Soler in the fourth inning.
Joe Adell added his third home run of the spring as the Angels outscored the Guardians despite falling behind 7-5. Los Angeles left-hander Grayson Rodriguez was a major benefactor, giving up two hits and no runs over 4 2/3 innings to improve to 1-2. He had five strikeouts and four walks.
Joey Cantillo allowed four hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings to fall to 0-2 despite striking out six. Johnathan Rodriguez and Dayan Frias had RBIs in Cleveland’s two-run sixth inning.
Reds 6, Giants 1
Chase Burns started off a stellar day by striking out two innings on the mound for Cincinnati as the Reds dominated San Francisco in Scottsdale in the first of two games between the two clubs.
Burns (1-1) was the first of six Cincinnati pitchers to hold the Giants to just one run on seven hits, with nine strikeouts and one walk. San Francisco starter Landon Roof (0-1) gave up four hits and two runs with four strikeouts and three walks.
JJ Bleday opened the scoring for the Reds with a two-run single in the first. Tyson Lewis was the only Reds player with two hits, collecting a single and a double.
Reds 1, Giants 0
The Cincinnati staff took things a step further by shutting out San Francisco by five hits in the second game in Goodyear, Arizona.
The Giants’ pitchers did their job well, limiting the Reds to one hit. In the first inning, Sal Stewart’s hit hit Elly De La Cruz. Reds starter Brady Singer (1-0) gave up three of his five hits in four innings. Five pitchers each pitched one inning, and Hunter Parks recorded his first save with the ninth pitch.
Carson Whisenhunt (0-1) took the loss, going 3 2/3 with six strikeouts and three walks.
Dodgers 10, Mariners 7
Teoscar Hernandez hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Kyle Tucker added his first home run for Los Angeles as the reigning World Series champions earned a win over Seattle in Peoria, Arizona.
James Tibbs III also homered, hit another 3-run shot, and six Dodgers relievers held the Mariners to one hit and one run over seven innings. LA starter Landon Knack gave up three runs in two innings, and Yency Almonte gave up three more runs in the ninth.
Colt Emerson homered in the ninth as Seattle attempted a comeback. Rhylan Thomas tied the game in the second inning after a two-run double, and six runs proved to be too much for the Dodgers.
Diamondbacks 11, Royals 5
AJ Vukovich and Jansel Luis homered and the Arizona bullpen put up a stellar effort to earn a win over Kansas City in Surprise, Arizona.
Merrill Kelly, who the Diamondbacks re-signed this offseason after being traded to Texas last season, pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and two runs. Arizona allowed Royals starter Michael Wacha to give up four hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings.
Catcher Carter Jensen had two hits, two RBI and the Royals’ only home run. Noah Cameron was a reliever for Kansas City and gave up 8 hits and 2 runs in 4 innings.
