Mandatory Credit: Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Former National League MVP Andrew McCutchen made his spring training debut for the Rangers on Monday in Peoria, Arizona, hitting two fifth inning home runs as Texas beat San Diego 4-1.
McCutchen, 39, signed a minor league contract with the Rangers on March 5. He began his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2009, won MVP honors in 2013, and spent 12 of his 17 seasons in Pittsburgh. McCutchen went 1-for-3 as Texas’ designated hitter.
Another new Ranger (former Met Brandon Nimmo) hit a two-run triple in the second inning to give Texas a two-run shot.
San Diego’s Randy Vazquez, who is likely to be the 4th or 5th starter, enjoyed a solid spring, but allowed two runs and five bases in four innings. The Padres only had four hits.
Cardinals 7, Orioles 2
St. Louis top prospect JJ Wetherholt hits the game-winning home run for St. Louis against Baltimore in Jupiter, Florida.
Weatherholt, ranked 5th in baseball prospects according to MLB Pipeline, hit his second spring home run in the top of the 6th inning to break a 2-2 tie. He’s hitting .278 as he works his way to the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster. The Cardinals added three more runs in the seventh inning on home runs by Joshua Baez and Chase Davis. Matt Svanson recorded the win with a scoreless frame after Matthew Liberatore struck out seven and allowed two runs over five innings.
Sam Huff homered, Jhonkensy Noel had an RBI single for the Orioles and saw Nestor German take the loss after allowing five runs in three innings.
Braves 9, Twins 8
Atlanta scored eight runs in the first inning before escaping with a win over Minnesota in Northport, Florida.
Mauricio Dubon had 2 hits and 3 RBIs, Austin Riley went 3-for-3 with a run scored and Michael Harris II and NL Rookie of the Year Drake Baldwin each had a pair for the Braves. Carlos Carrasco earned the win despite allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Royce Lewis and Josh Bell ignited the comeback race, hitting two of the Twins’ five home runs. Luke Keaschall went 2-for-2 with a triple and a double. Starting pitcher Zebby Matthews struggled in the loss, allowing six runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Tigers 4, Race 4
Kevin McGonigle’s seventh-inning home run helped Detroit tie the game against Tampa Bay in Lakeland, Florida.
Will Simpson hit a two-run home run for the Rays and went 3-for-4, raising his spring average to .455. John Peck also homered for the Tigers and Riley Greene (2-for-3) opened the scoring with an RBI single.
Framber Valdez had a strong performance on the mound in Detroit, giving up one earned run and striking out six over four innings. Rays starter Shane McClanahan struggled a bit more, allowing three hits and three runs over 2 1/3 innings.
Red Sox 5, Phillies 3
Nick Sogard’s three-run home run played a key role in Boston’s comeback victory over Philadelphia in Fort Myers, Florida.
Trevor Story, Braiden Ward and Allan Castro each had two of the Red Sox’ 11 hits, with Ward adding an RBI and his 14th stolen base of the spring. Boston won despite a suboptimal start from Garrett Crochet, who allowed two runs in two innings but three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Jose Rodriguez provided the Phillies’ only RBI on a single, one of the team’s six hits, all of which were singles. Bryan Rincon scored the team’s final run on a steal of home. Bryse Wilson was the losing pitcher, allowing six hits and four runs in three innings.
Astros 10, Cardinals (ss) 3
Joey Loperfido scored three points to help Houston lose against St. Louis in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Loperfido homered and added an RBI single and Taylor Trammell contributed a two-run triple for the Astros. The Astros’ pitching staff recorded 13 strikeouts but walked seven as Peter Lambert earned the win in three innings of relief.
Nelson Velazquez had two of the Cardinals’ five hits, including an RBI single in the seventh. They stranded 11 runners and set the stage for the loss after starting Richard Pitts gave up four runs on six hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Angels 2, Giants 0
Jose Soriano of Los Angeles and Robbie Ray of San Francisco dominated the starts in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Soriano allowed one hit, one walk and four strikeouts in five innings. Ray did not give up a hit in four innings, but did walk four and strike out four.
The Angels scored their lone run of the game in the top of the ninth. Yolmer Sanchez, who started in the White Sox infield from 2017 to 2019 but has not appeared in the major leagues since 2022, scored the first run of the game with a hit to left.
Guardians 6, Royals 2
All-Star outfielder Steven Kwan hit a two-run homer in back-to-back at-bats for Cleveland against Kansas City in Surprise, Arizona.
Kwan hit extra-base hits in the third and fifth innings, and Brayan Rocchio followed Kwan with a home run in the fifth. Starting pitcher Parker Messick, who posted a 3-1 record and 2.72 ERA in seven late-season starts in 2025, did not allow a run in 4 2/3 innings and struck out four.
Royals minor leaguer Luca Treacy hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Reliever Nick Mears allowed three runs and two home runs in the fifth inning.
White Sox 12, Rockies 3
Chicago’s first 11 batters reached base in the fourth inning when the White Sox gave up 11 runs against Colorado in Phoenix, Arizona.
Former Rockie Drew Romo had a pair of run-scoring hits in the inning, including a base-clearing triple. Oliver Dunn hit a solo home run in the second inning and then added two hits in the fourth to score two runs.
Colorado pitcher Valente Velozo, who spent his first two seasons in Miami, failed to retire a single batter in the fourth inning, allowing 6 of 11 runs. Jordan Beck went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run for the Rockies.
Diamondbacks 2, Mariners 1
Starting pitcher Zach Gallen continued his excellent spring by retiring all nine batters he faced as Arizona defeated Seattle in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Gallen, who was a free agent before re-signing with the club after seven seasons in the desert, recorded three strikeouts this spring and went six consecutive scoreless innings. The Diamondbacks won the game in the bottom of the ninth when Adrian Rodriguez’s two-out infield hit scored Alexander Benoit from second base.
Seattle starting pitcher Bryan Woo struck out four and allowed one run in four innings. Former Cardinal Brendan Donovan went 2-for-3 to lead off the Mariners.
Athletics 9, Reds 7
Former New York Met Jeff McNeil went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs as the Athletics beat Cincinnati in Goodyear, Arizona.
McNeil, the batting average leader, had his first hit in the top of the fourth inning and had a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Zach Gelof added two hits and had a double in one inning.
Reds starter Rhett Lowder, who missed most of the 2025 season due to elbow pain, allowed five runs (three earned) and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Lowder, the seventh pick in the 2023 draft, is competing for a rotation spot. Former Athletic JJ Bleday hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Rece Hinds added a three-run homer in the second half.
Dodgers 4, Brewers 3
Journeyman catcher Seby Zavala hit a game-tying RBI single with two runs in the eighth inning as Los Angeles rallied past Milwaukee in Phoenix, Arizona.
Zavala signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers after spending an injury-plagued 2025 season with Boston’s Triple-A team in Worcester. Starting pitcher Emmett Sheehan, who appeared in six postseason games for Los Angeles in 2025, allowed one run but reached base five times in 2 1/3 innings.
Jake Bowers hit a solo home run, his third home run this spring, giving Milwaukee a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. Long reliever Aaron Ashby got the start and allowed one run with four strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings.
