San Diego (2-0-0, 6 points) heads to Kansas City, Kansas, after two close wins at home, most recently a 2-0 win over St. Louis City on Sunday. After reaching the Western Conference finals in the team’s expansion season, SDFC picked up where it left off in 2025, starting the year with a 5-0 win over CF Montreal.
Yes, SDFC’s two wins this year have come against opponents who finished 13th in their respective conferences last season, but both were decisive.
Anders Dreyer and Marcus Ingvarsen scored for San Diego in recent games, and each added an assist to each other’s tally.
Dreyer’s effort on Sunday earned him the distinction of becoming the second-fastest player in MLS history to reach 20 goals and 20 assists, and he did so in 36 regular season games. He is next to Inter Miami’s superstar Lionel Messi (26 games).
Last year, Dreyer scored 38 goals (19 goals, 19 assists), tying the league record for most in a first year.
“Of course it all starts with my teammates,” Dreyer said of getting to 20-20. “They know where to find me, in the pocket or at the back, and I’m lucky enough to score when they get the chance.”
Sporting KC (0-1-1, 1 point) gained momentum after losing 3-0 to the San Jose Earthquakes in its season opener with a 2-2 draw at home against the Columbus Crew last Saturday.
Dejan Joveljic scored both of Sporting’s goals in the tie, and goalkeeper John Pulskamp saved a penalty kick with three minutes left in regulation to allow Kansas City to split the points.
“In just one game we improved,” Joveljic said.
After the win, Pulskamp was quick to credit his teammates for the work that stopped him.
“If you look at (the clutch save) 35 minutes ago, I think we were playing our best football,” Fullskamp said. “I think about 80 per cent of penalty kicks are scored – those are the moments when the goalkeeper is really pushed to his limit. And luckily I was able to come up with one today.”
San Diego has never lost to Sporting KC, recording a scoreless draw and a 2-0 win last year.
