Kathmandu, Nepal — Nepal is holding parliamentary elections on Thursday, a year after a youth-led uprising forced out a government elected in the last election.
Here are some statistics from the election:
The election is being held just three years after Nepal’s previous national vote, which led to the fall of the government in 2025 after a political upheaval that gave way to an interim government that later called for new elections.
According to the Election Commission, about 19 million people are registered to vote in Nepal. About 966,000 men and 924,000 women. Another 200 voters are registered in the “others” category, which includes people who do not identify as male or female and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The number of registered voters has increased by nearly 1 million since the last parliamentary election in November 2022, as a youth-led uprising sparked greater interest in politics.
The voting age in Nepal is 18, and officials have urged eligible young adults to register.
A crucial issue in the campaign is the youth-led uprising that toppled the previous government and triggered early elections in September 2025.
Political parties have vowed to amplify the voice of young voters, tackle corruption and improve governance.
Voters directly elect 165 members to the House of Representatives, the powerful lower chamber of parliament. The remaining 110 seats in the 275-member House are filled through a proportional representation system, with political parties nominating legislators based on the share of votes each party receives.
Previous government in Nepal has largely been a coalition, with two or more parties joining forces to command a majority in the House. The country has a history of political instability, having seen 15 governments in the past two decades.
The Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) have been the dominant political parties for a long time. However, he was part of the government that was ousted last year and faced public resentment. Formed in 2022, the Rashtriya Swatantra Party has garnered significant support on the campaign trail. Ex-Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, who is also a former rapper, is the prime ministerial candidate.
