Mandatory Credit: James Guillory-Imagn Image Carolina’s Sebastian Aho broke a three-game tie with a power-play goal after the Hurricanes lost a three-goal lead to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning in a matchup of the top two teams in the Eastern Conference on Thursday night in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Logan Stankoven and Taylor Hall both had a goal and an assist, and Nikolaj Ehlers also scored both in the opening seven minutes for the Hurricanes, playing his first game since the Olympic layoff. Seth Jarvis also had a goal and an assist, while Andrei Svechnikov assisted on two of Carolina’s goals. Brandon Bussi made 24 saves.
Brandon Point posted a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs to open their schedule after rest the night before. Brandon Hagel, Nikita Kucherov and Dominic James also scored for the Lightning. Jake Guentzel provided three assists. Jonas Johansson stopped 28 shots.
Carolina has won four of its 11-game point streak. The Lightning’s six-game winning streak ended, and Tampa Bay was limited to six shots in the third quarter.
Tampa Bay coach John Cooper missed two consecutive games due to the death of his father. Assistant coach Rob Zettler took his place.
Aho, a member of Finland’s bronze medal team, scored his 21st goal of the season on the Hurricanes’ second power play.
Goals by Ehlers, Stankoven and Hall gave the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead, but Hagel and Kucherov countered 35 seconds later in the first period. James’ goal tied the game 1:58 into the second period.
Jarvis, a member of Canada’s Olympic silver medal team, put Carolina back on top ahead of Point’s power-play tally with 5:58 left in the second period.
Point, who has been sidelined with injury since Jan. 12, appeared in both Tampa Bay games this week and recorded three goals and two assists.
