Salinas is set to expand its industrial headquarters in Portilger, Portugal, with the aim of doubling the site’s production capacity by the third quarter of 2027.
This project focuses on production scaling for bio-based, medical grade, and circular co-polyesters.
The development comes as new EU packaging regulations stipulate that all packaging on the market must be recyclable by 2030, with targets for recycled content and improved traceability.
The company aims to meet these demands by increasing the production of recycled polyester, offering both chemically recycled post-consumer resin and ISCC+ biomass balance solutions that meet European compliance standards.
Selenis CEO Duarte Gil said: “This expansion is a bold step. We are doubling our capacity to meet the growing demand while ensuring we are fully aligned with the evolving European regulatory framework. Circularity is no longer just a concept; it is our industrial reality.”
A key part of the upgrade involves the installation of a continuous polymerization (CP) line alongside Salinas’ existing batch production setup.
The goal of these additions is to simplify the manufacturing process, improve energy efficiency and reduce reliance on natural gas through greater electrification.
Most of the facility’s electricity use will be provided by an on-site solar park.
The additional capacity is expected to respond to demand from the food, healthcare, and textile industries seeking alternatives with lower carbon footprints.
Salinas Chief Operating Officer Carlos Paiva commented: “This expansion is based on measurable environmental improvement. By implementing sustainable polymerization, we are dramatically reducing the energy intensity of each ton of production, while our shift towards electrification and the reduction of natural gas consumption are radically reducing our carbon footprint.”
“When combined with our on-site solar farm, these strategic areas ensure that our growth is strongly aligned with our long-term global decarbonisation goals.”
In 2024, Salinas worked with UPM Biochemicals and Bormeoli Pharma to develop wood-based PET bottles for pharmaceuticals.
“Salinus plans to double production at Portuguese facility by 2027” was originally developed and published by Packaging Gateway, a brand owned by Global Data.
