Mandatory Credit: Sergei Belski-Imagn Image Joel Farabee scored twice and added an assist and Ryan Strome scored a goal and added an assist in his team debut as the host Calgary Flames fired a three-goal second period to upset the Eastern Conference-leading Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 on Saturday night.
Morgan Frost had one goal and two assists and Blake Coleman had one goal and one assist for the Flames, who have lost four straight games after losing two key veterans in MacKenzie Weegar and Nazem Kadri last week.
Goaltender Dustin Wolf made 25 saves.
Seth Jarvis had a goal and two assists, Andrei Svechnikov had a goal and an assist and Sean Walker and Alexander Nikishin scored once for the Hurricanes, who lost in regulation for the second time in 16 outings.
Sebastian Aho recorded three assists and goalie Brandon Bush stopped 20 shots as his personal nine-game winning streak ended.
Building off a strong performance, the Hurricanes got an early boost when Jarvis opened the scoring on his first shot of the game just 44 seconds into the clash.
The Flames rallied after the first intermission and tied the game even when Strome, acquired from the Anaheim Ducks in the closing minutes, buried a sharp shot 19 seconds into the second quarter. Olli Maatta, making his Calgary debut after being acquired from the Utah Mammoth in the Weegar trade earlier this week, had an assist.
Farabee capitalized on a rebound four minutes later to end a strong shift by the hosts to put the Flames ahead, before Frost’s power-play goal made it a 3-1 game and a loose puck buried in the slot at the 7:06 mark of the frame.
Coleman took advantage of a Bussi mistake at 2:24 of the third period to extend the lead. The Hurricanes goalie misplayed the puck, leading to a Farabee opportunity and a tap-in on a rebound by Coleman.
Walker made it 4-2 with 4:41 to play, capping off a golden opportunity after a Calgary turnover, and Nikishin got Carolina within one with a power-play goal, hitting a point shot 62 seconds later.
But Farabee completed a breakaway record set by Frost to win with 2:18 remaining in regulation.
Svechnikov closed out the scoring with 11.9 seconds on the clock, but it was too little, too late.
Carolina defenseman Shane Gostisbehere, who was injured Friday night in Edmonton, was sidelined with a lower-body injury.
Calgary defenseman Zach Whitecloud left the game late in the first period after suffering an upper-body injury after falling awkwardly into the boards.
