Hunter Greene was a 2024 National League All-Star and is generally regarded as one of the major league’s best starting pitchers when healthy.
The Cincinnati Reds right-hander boasts a triple-digit fastball, having been limited to double-digits since March of last year. Green, speaking to reporters Wednesday at Reds spring training in Arizona, said he is nursing a bone spur in his right elbow and doesn’t know if he will be ready for Opening Day.
more: The Blue Jays signed the free agent All-Star and immediately added him to their spring training roster.
“If we have to do something (surgically), we can do it early (during spring training) and get it done quickly so it can be a big part of the season,” Greene said, via FOX19’s Charlie Goldsmith in Cincinnati. “I’m ready to play once we make the playoffs.”
Depending on the nature of the injury, Greene may not throw for the remainder of spring training. According to Goldsmith, he is scheduled to see the Reds’ team doctor, Dr. Timothy Kremchek, and Dr. El Attrache for an MRI.
Green, 26, went 25-29 with a 3.65 ERA (123 ERA+) in four seasons with the Reds. Last year, he made 19 starts, going 7-4, with an ERA of 2.76, striking out 132 and walking only 26 in 107.2 innings.
