The big splash is coming for the Ravens against Maxx Crosby.

The Las Vegas Raiders announced Tuesday that Baltimore had “backed out” of a reported trade for the star defensive end, suddenly nullifying what had been one of the biggest moves of the offseason.

“The Baltimore Ravens have withdrawn their trade agreement for Maxx Crosby,” the Raiders wrote on social media. “There will be no further comment at this time.”

The deal fell through for medical reasons, according to NFL Network, with reports that the Ravens were not comfortable taking the risk related to Crosby’s knee.

The trade was expected to send Crosby to the Ravens in exchange for two first-round picks (including the 14th overall pick this year), a significant return for a Raiders team in rebuilding mode and a rare, aggressive move from a Ravens club that has been seeking more disruption on the edge. Las Vegas also has the first pick in this year’s draft.

Crosby’s health has been a topic of discussion for months. He sat out last season with a knee injury before the Raiders shut him down with two games left. This decision upset him enough to leave the team facility. Crosby underwent left knee surgery in early January and said the surgery was successful.

This latest surprise puts both sides in the same position as before, just under a much brighter spotlight. Baltimore is holding on to a first-round pick and is on the market for pass rush help. The Raiders are sticking with their best-known but disgruntled defensive player despite a week of trade rumors pointing in a new direction. A deal also can’t be finalized until the new league year starts on Wednesday, but it hasn’t even reached that stage this time.

Crosby, 28, has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the last five seasons and was a second-team All-Pro twice. He registered 10 sacks in 15 games for the Raiders last season and has 69.5 sacks in 110 career games (104 starts).

Blockbuster is currently dead. The next question is whether it will remain the same, whether the Raiders will find another trade partner, or whether it will be renegotiated once everyone becomes comfortable with the medical.
