Last-place Wolves dominated Premier League champions Liverpool with a 2-1 win at Molineux Stadium on Tuesday.
Brazilian midfielder Andre scored a deflected goal four minutes from time to deal a blow to Liverpool’s hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
This sent Wolves fans into a frenzy as it was a thrilling finish to the game.
“This is Liverpool Football Club. It doesn’t matter where we are at the moment, whenever we beat them we have to enjoy that moment.” Wolves boss Rob Edwards said his side had brought rare joy to a season that looked set for relegation after Andre’s strike.
The dramatic end to the match came in the 83rd minute when Mohamed Salah ended a 10-game league goal drought and equalized for Liverpool shortly after Rodrigo Gomes had put Wolves ahead in the 78th.
As both teams went in search of a winner, Andre’s long-range effort was deflected off Joe Gomez and Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson got off on the wrong foot.
“I feel really good, it was an amazing game and an amazing night,” Rodrigo Gomes said.
It was Liverpool’s ninth league defeat of the season and a win by Chelsea over Aston Villa on Wednesday could see the defending champions drop to sixth.
The top four are guaranteed Champions League qualification, but the Premier League is likely to secure a bonus top five spot due to English clubs’ performance in Europe this season.
Liverpool, which aimed to win the title last season, is 16 points behind first place Arsenal.
“We are losing too many football games and dropping points,” Liverpool manager Arne Slott said. “The three times we’ve lost in the last 22 games have all been in overtime.”
Wolves’ victory gave them back-to-back league wins for the first time this season. On Friday they beat Aston Villa 2-0.
Although their chances of survival are very slim, they are 11 points adrift of safety but have enjoyed a late-season surge, including a recent 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
“What we’re doing now is showing grit and spirit and some quality. We’re competing with everyone,” Edwards said.
Everton gives home fans something to cheer about
Everton recorded a rare win at their new stadium, beating relegation battlers Burnley 2-0.
First-half goals from James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall gave Everton their fifth league win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium since moving to their new home at the start of the season. The win also boosted David Moyes’ side’s chances of qualifying for Europe as they moved to within one point of seventh-placed Brentford, who drew 0-0 with Bournemouth.
“Our away performance was amazing, but we didn’t get enough points here,” Tarkowski said. “We let ourselves down in some games here, conceding useless goals and not taking our chances.
“We are within touching distance of the European qualification teams. We have nine games left so we will get some wins on the board and see how we go. We are chasing them rather than looking down.”
Leeds are in danger of being dragged back into the relegation zone due to consecutive losses.
Habib Diarra’s second-half penalty gave Sunderland a 1-0 win at Elland Road.
Leeds are six points above the drop zone, but that could be reduced if 18th-placed West Ham pick up a point at Fulham on Wednesday.
Port Vale, last in England’s third division, defeated Bristol City 1-0 after extra time and will face Sunderland in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Ben Wain scored the winning goal in the 112th to defeat Bristol, ranked 10th in the Championship second division.
