Photographer Dr. Elliott McGucken captures rare super bloom — huge — in Death Valley

Not only is Death Valley known as the driest and lowest national park in the United States, it is also one of the hottest places on earth. It holds the temperature record of 134 degrees Fahrenheit, set in 1913. Despite its creepy name, Death Valley is anything but lifeless. Over the past few weeks, a rare “super bloom” has shown off its vitality.

For landscape and nature photographer Dr. Elliott McGucken, the visual cacophony of wildflowers in the foreground of mesquite flat dunes or majestic mountain ranges like Telescope Peak is a source of endless fascination. The main floral displays in Death Valley are magenta and yellow – Phacelia and Desert Gold respectively. There’s also Mojave starflower, brown-eyed primrose, five-spotted flower, sand verbena, brittle shrubs and the uniquely named gravel ghost.

While filming in Yellowstone National Park, McGucken learned that Death Valley had experienced record rainfall over the past few months and was gearing up for the super bloom. Not wanting to miss out, since it only happened occasionally – the last times in 2016, 2005 and 1998 – he drove to California. “As nature photographers, we often wait for those ‘damn’ moments to pack up and move out, and this was a ‘damn’ moment!” says McGucken. “I went from minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit to over 90 degrees Fahrenheit in one day!”

In early March, Death Valley National Park announced it was experiencing its best bloom season in a decade. At lower elevations, wildflowers bloom in early March and can last until mid-month, depending on weather conditions. At higher elevations, wildflowers bloom from April to June, depending on altitude.

“While I’ve photographed smaller blooms in the Panamint Valley back in 2024, I’ve never seen so much greenery in the lower parts of the park, from Stovepipe Wells to Mesquite Dunes and from Furnace Creek to Badwater,” McGucken said. “I’ve been taking photos over the past few days to make the most of this once-a-decade event.”

The photos here were taken over several days, including March 16th. While the super bloom period is currently thought to be over, there are still some displays in certain areas of the park. See more of McGucken’s content on Instagram and purchase prints on his website.
