A barebones projector designed for kids, the One Fire Star projector is cheap, cute and easy to use. However, it has some design flaws that prevent us from ranking it among the best star projectors you can buy. But even with a few issues, we think it would be an ideal star projector for kids who want fun stars and shapes projected onto their bedroom ceiling.
Key specifications
- Size: 5.28 x 5.28 x 3.66 inches
- Bulb type: LED
- Laser: No
- Control: On the device
- Rotation: Yes
- Sleep timer: No
- Speaker: No
However, the One Fire Star projector has no additional features. Without a remote control, everything it can do is controlled with just three buttons on its body. That makes it easy enough to use for kids, but aside from projecting and turning a rotating motor on and off, there’s nothing else. No night light, no music player, not even a sleep timer. This is a pure projector, so if you’re looking for a more rounded package, this isn’t for you.
Design
- Easy to control
- Projection domes are flimsy
- Cheap construction
The One Fire Star projector has a light, simple design with a star-shaped body. At the top is a dome that acts as the projection element. It is available in two colors, pink and blue. With only three buttons on the side of the device and no remote, it’s easy to use: one button turns it on and off, one button cycles through color options, and the last button turns the rotation feature on and off.
It’s pretty cheaply made though, which isn’t too surprising given the $22 or so price tag. It comes with six projection domes, which change the images projected on the walls and ceiling, but these are made of thin plastic and can be easily bent or broken, especially when handled by small children. More worryingly, when you remove the dome to replace it, the projector’s components are exposed underneath. Not only does this mean that the projector is likely to be easily damaged, but they get quite hot during use and a child could touch it when trying to change the dome.
Performance
- Wide range
- Fun, colorful projections
- Choice of projection domes included
With six different projection domes to choose from, the One Fire Star Projector is far more than just a star projector. In fact, only one of the six domes has a star and moon theme. The others have dinosaurs, unicorns, jellyfish and Christmas pictures. Regardless of which dome you install, however, you’re going to get colorful, bright images, with a range of colors to browse through.
Despite the projector’s size, it has a very wide throw, covering most of the ceiling and walls of a small to medium-sized bedroom. It’s capable of creating a magical atmosphere, but that’s about it: without any extra features, it’s very barebones in what it can offer, especially considering that the star projections here are far from scientific. It is best suited for very young children, who will appreciate the extra fun projections on offer, such as dinosaurs and unicorns.
Functionality
- Limited extra features
- No remote control
- Rechargeable battery
As we have already mentioned, the One Fire Star Projector has limited functionality outside of being a projector. There are no sleep timers, no night lights, no music player. It doesn’t even come with a remote control. If you are looking for a projector with different features, this is not it.
One thing it does have, however, is a built-in battery. It can be powered via USB, but unplug it and a 2400maH battery will keep it going for up to seven hours before needing to be recharged. This is ideal for moving around the house, or taking on trips; you can even use it while camping. This can be a selling point in itself, as most projectors need to be plugged in at all times when in use.
Should I buy the One Fire Star projector?
If you want something cheap and cheerful for young children, the One Fire Star Projector does a decent enough job of offering colorful, far-reaching projections. But its faults, including its flimsy design and the fact that components are exposed when you swap the projection dome, hold us back from fully recommending it.
If you’re looking for something a little more solid or something that packs more functionality for kids, we highly recommend the YACHANCE Night Light Star Projector. Although it does not have replaceable protrusions, it boasts an excellent build quality and has a night light, a sleep timer and a sound machine.
If you’re looking for a more scientific projector, check out the Hommkiety Galaxy Projector. Suitable for both adults and children, it can project 10 different images thanks to the range of plates it comes with.
