No. 1 transfer portal QB, explained by ‘transfer tendency’

LSU and Lane Kiffin made the biggest splash of the college football offseason by signing the nation’s top transfer quarterback. Sam Leavitt, formerly of Arizona State University, joined the Tigers as the centerpiece of a transfer class designed to return LSU to the national championship. The move marks Leavitt’s third visit in four years after stints at Michigan State and Arizona State. While he brings a Big 12 championship resume to Baton Rouge, his arrival raises questions about his consistency.

As the Tigers transition into the Kiffin era, attention remains focused on Leavitt’s ability to handle the jump to the SEC. Domestic analysts are now evaluating his elite production based on his history of ball security issues and recent season-ending injuries.

No. 1 transfer portal QB Sam Leavitt’s outlook for LSU

ASU Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt (10) scrambles from the backfield during a game against the Houston Cougars at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Oct. 25, 2025.

Acquiring Leavitt is a big gamble for the LSU program under Lane Kiffin. Rated as the top quarterback in the transfer portal with a $4 million NIL valuation, Leavitt represents the modern era in which roster limits are rising overnight. However, prominent analyst Josh Pate recently highlighted the concerns that have come with the quarterback from his Big 12 days.

“This time last year, there was some bad buzz about Sam Leavitt at Arizona State. As you know, he was a very turnover guy,” Pate said on the College Football Show podcast. “You keep hearing all kinds of not-so-good feedback.”

This reputation for volatility creates a unique dynamic in the SEC, where tolerance for error is thin. Leavitt’s 2024 season was historic as he led Arizona State to its first College Football Playoff appearance with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions. But Lisfranc’s injury cut his 2025 season short, and he enters a new system with an entirely new supporting cast. Pate noted that Leavitt will be tested immediately against Blake Baker’s defense in routine practice.

The ripple effects of this move extend across the country. By securing a top signal caller, LSU has shifted the balance of power among SEC contenders seeking notable transfers like Auburn’s Byrum Brown. If Leavitt overcomes his turnover tendencies, LSU becomes a legitimate threat to established powers like Georgia and Texas. If the problems persist, the Tigers risk a rocky season.

LSU is currently working to build chemistry between Leavitt and an improved receiving corps. This timing is critical, as analysts like Greg McElroy have noted that portal quarterbacks often struggle with protection checks and leverage reads early in their tenure.

The Tigers host their annual spring game at Tiger Stadium on Saturday, April 11.
