Mandatory Credit: Corinne Votaw-Imagn Image Mason McTavish scored the game-winning goal as the host Anaheim Ducks extended their five-game winning streak to an entertaining 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames on Sunday.
Cutter Gauthier scored twice for the Ducks, who won 12 of 14 games and moved to within one point of the Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division. Anaheim also has one game ahead. Goalkeeper Lukas Dostal made 32 saves in overtime and gave up one goal in the shootout.
McTavish patiently waited for the opening before depositing the puck for the differential winner in the third round. Anaheim holds a perfect 7-0 record in penalty shootouts this season. Leo Carlsen also scored in the penalty shoot-out.
Joel Farabee and Yegor Sharangovich scored in regulation for the Flames, who completed a three-game road trip through California with a 1-1-1 record. Goalie Devin Cooley stopped 34 shots in overtime but couldn’t find enough magic in the shootout.
Islanders 5, Panthers 4
Anders Lee scored the winning goal with 30.9 seconds left for a New York surge that overcame another two-goal deficit to beat Florida in El Monte, New York.
Lee stepped on the Panthers’ Aaron Ekblad, extended his stick to draw goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and then buried a forehand into the wide-open left corner of the net. Rookie Matthew Schaefer scored twice and Carson Soucy and Bo Horvat also scored for the Islanders, who have won their fifth straight game. New York has been 2-0 in each of its last three wins. Goalie David Rittich made 29 saves.
Sam Bennett scored twice and Sandys Vilmanis and Sam Rinehart each had one goal for Florida, which has lost seven of nine goals (2-7-0). Bobrovsky recorded 21 saves.
Penguins 5, Golden Knights 0
Arturs Silovs made 22 saves to earn his second shutout of the season as host Pittsburgh earned a win over Vegas.
It was Silovs’ second career shutout of 47 career starts. Brian Rust, Ben Kindel and Justin Brazeau each had a goal and an assist, Erik Karlsson had two assists and Egor Chinakov and Rickard Raquel also scored for the Penguins, who improved to 10-1-4 since Jan. 13.
Adin Hill made 17 saves for the Golden Knights, who were playing for the second straight game. Las Vegas forward Mark Stone left near the end of the first period and did not return after defenseman Kris Letang pushed him into his upper left arm with his cane. Stone got down on one knee and immediately skated to the locker room.
Blues 3, Wild 1
Pavel Buchnevich scored the go-ahead goal with 3:39 left in the game, giving St. Louis a victory over Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Logan Mailloux and Robert Thomas also scored for the Blues, who bounced back from a loss to the New Jersey Devils a day earlier. St. Louis won for the second time in the last three games. Goaltender Joel Hofer stopped 22 of 23 shots in the win. He improved to 14-11-3 on the season and moved to within one win of 50 career wins.
Kirill Kaprizov scored the Wild’s only goal, which halted back-to-back contests. Goaltender Filip Gustavsson made 21 of 23 shots.
Sharks 2, Jets 1 (OT)
Michael Massa scored at the 1:40 mark of overtime, and San Jose rallied for a win against visiting Winnipeg.
Misa carried the puck up the middle, split the defense, veered left and fired a wrist shot to the short side of Connor Hellebuyck’s blocker. Will Smith also scored and Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves for the Sharks, who have won their second straight game after a five-game skid.
Morgan Barron scored and Hellebuyck made 31 saves for the Jets, who have lost 4 of 5 (1-1-3).
Blackhawks 4, Mammoths 0
Arvid Soderblom made 22 saves for his first career shutout and Chicago defeated Utah in Salt Lake City.
It was Soderblom’s 104th career game. Teuvo Teravainen scored on a power-play goal and a short-handed goal, while Nick Foligno and Landon Slaggert also scored for the Blackhawks, who snapped a three-game losing streak. They have also lost five of their previous six.
Karel Beymelka stopped 24 shots for the Mammoths, who lost for the second time in their last five games.
