New OC Nathaniel Hackett will set the Arizona menu.

Mike LaFleur didn’t panic when choosing an offensive coordinator. The new Cardinals coach knew exactly who he wanted.

That’s why Nathaniel Hackett got the job, LaFleur said Wednesday.

“He is very highly regarded, especially within our profession,” LaFleur said. “And you believe one thing from this press conference: I literally wanted him and no one else. And here he is.”

Hackett joined the Cardinals on Friday after spending last season as a defensive analyst with LaFleur’s brother Matt in Green Bay. He was the Packers’ offensive coordinator from 2019 to 2021 prior to his time in Denver.

The former Broncos coach said he could tell “without a doubt” that LaFleur really wanted the role.

“I’ve known Mike for a long time and he’s a great guy, first and foremost, and I think this game is about relationships,” Hackett said Wednesday. “It’s about how you work with people and how you communicate. And to be able to work with him is very exciting for me. And every conversation we’ve had over the years has been really great.”

Their connection goes beyond football philosophy.

“He talked a little bit about philosophy and all that, and a lot more in depth about his family and how he was doing,” Hackett said. “It means a lot to me, so I feel very honored to be here.”

Hackett and LaFleur have known each other for a long time. 10 years. After less than a week of working together in Arizona so far, Hackett said there are “a lot of similarities” and “definitely some differences” between the LaFleur brothers.

There is an interesting similarity here. Hackett was Matt’s offensive coordinator in his first season as head coach. Now he’s taking on the same role in Mike’s first season running the team.

Hackett said she wants to help Mike get through what he’s already been through and do whatever he needs to do.

What does Hackett think these two LaFleurs have in common? Being an offensive coordinator that doesn’t call plays.

LaFleur, who said he will handle play-calling duties himself, described Hackett’s role as “set the table, set the menu, have great energy around the building, and have great communication when working with the defense.”

“It’s a really great opportunity,” LaFleur said of landing Hackett.
