Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Image David Coit scored 17 points to lead 17th-seeded Maryland to a 70-60 victory over 16th-seeded Oregon in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament on Tuesday in Chicago.
Elijah Saunders scored all 15 of his points from deep and made 5 of 6 3-pointers for the Terrapins (12-20), who face a quick turnaround when they play No. 9 seed Iowa at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Solomon Washington and Andre Mills each added 12 points for Maryland, which avenged an early loss to Oregon in a disappointing season in which the Terrapins posted their worst record since the 1988-89 season.
Maryland stormed out to a 9-0 lead and held on the rest of the period behind a defense that limited the Ducks to 36.5% shooting overall, including a 4-of-21 (19.0%) performance from beyond the arc.
Nate Bittle scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to pace Oregon (12-20), which finished the season with its worst record since 2008-09.
Kwame Evans Jr. added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Ducks, playing against his hometown school. Takai Simpkins had 10 points and 5 assists.
Oregon got off to a poor start, missing its first 11 shots from the floor. Meanwhile, Mills and Coit each made two baskets.
It was just over 11 minutes into the game when Bittle broke through to score the Ducks’ first field goal. He hit a tough chance inside, surrounded by four Terrapins.
Late in the first half, Coit and Saunders hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to cap a 10-point burst that extended the Terrapins’ lead to 31-10.
Washington, who energized the game with a block on one end and a layup on the other, ended the period in fitting fashion with a dunk with two seconds left to give Maryland a 33-12 advantage.
When the first half ended, Bittle was the only Oregon player to score from the field. His teammates went 0-for-15 during that span.
Down by 24 points with less than nine minutes remaining, Oregon scored 12 straight points to cut the deficit to 58-46 with 4:59 left.
Oregon cut the deficit to single digits on Jamari Phillips’ 3-pointer with 3:01 left, but the Ducks never got closer than that the rest of the game.
Darius Adams added 10 points in the second half to help Maryland pull out the win.
