Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the team has agreed to a deal to send veteran defenseman MacKenzie Weegar to the Utah Mammoth.
Weegar has a no-trade clause but agreed to waive it to complete the deal, Sportsnet’s Eric Francis reports.
Returning to Calgary will be defenseman Olli Maatta, three 2026 second-round picks and prospect Jonathan Castagna, Friedman reported. The three picks the Flames acquired belong to Utah, Ottawa and the New York Rangers.
Castagna, 20, plays in the NCAA for Cornell and has 32 points in 29 games this season. He was selected 70th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft.
Wednesday morning, Weegar spoke with Sportsnet’s Eric Francis about a possible trade.
When asked about the possibility of waiving his trade ban, he said, “I would say this.”
“I think at some point you have to take everything into account. Will that happen? I don’t know, but it’s definitely the first time I’ve been in a situation where there’s a lot of buzz around. So it’s new and different.”
Weegar, 32, will immediately give the Mammoths a top-four boost on the blue line ahead of the playoffs. He is not a rental player and is under contract with a cap hit of $6.25 million beyond the 2030-31 season.
This season, he leads the Flames in ice time with 23:07 per game and has three goals, 21 points, and a minus-35 rating in 60 games.
“Just like they should consider trading me, I should consider all my options,” he told Francis.
“But I love it here. I want to win here, and it’s really unfortunate that we’re all going to be in this situation. But that’s part of the game. I just want to focus on how we can all find a way to play together despite all the rumors and things like that. It’s definitely a strange time.”
The Flames are having a disappointing season and will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season. Last January, they traded veteran defenseman Rasmus Anderson to the Vegas Golden Knights and were reportedly buying Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman before the March 6 trade deadline.
Weegar is in his fourth season with the Flames after being acquired along with Jonathan Huberdeau in the 2023 Matthew Tkachuk trade.
