Mandatory Credit: Joe Puetz-Imagn Image Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves as the visiting New Jersey Devils snapped their fifth straight loss with a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday.
Timo Meier, Dougie Hamilton and Nico Hischier scored for the Devils and Luke Hughes earned an assist in his first game since Jan. 19. He was sidelined due to an upper body injury.
Pavel Buchnevich scored for the Blues, who suffered their ninth defeat in 11 games. Jordan Binnington took the loss, stopping 30 of 32 shots.
The first period went quickly but no goals were scored. Jack Hughes had two good chances for the Devils with a shot coming in from the left wing and a deflected shot from the left circle.
The Blues had a few chances as well, including a breakaway from Dylan Holloway on the right wing and a shot from Logan Mailloux through traffic at the blue line.
The Devils dominated the second period, outscoring the Blues 17-5 to take a 2-0 lead.
New Jersey’s pressure began on the power play when Meier tested Binnington. Jack Hughes set up Brett Pesce for a shot that went off the post.
Pesce then moved in from the right wing and set up Meier to put the Devils up 1-0.
And New Jersey’s shots kept coming. Meyer came from the right faceoff dot and Hischier came from the slot. After the Blues survived a goalmouth flurry, they went on a late power play.
But their only chance was Philip Broberg’s extended filming without a screen. New Jersey resumed the pressure and scored on a power play, with Jack Hughes getting around the back of the net to score Hamilton from the center point.
With Binnington off the ice for an extra attacker, Markstrom attempted an empty-net goal. Buchnevich blocked a shot and then scored off a pass from Pius Suter.
But Hischier finished the Blues off with an empty-net goal just five seconds into the game.
