Injury log: Gonzalez, Stevenson, Dunn, Edman

As of last week, Red Sox utility infielder Romi Gonzalez I suffered from shoulder disease and received a platelet-rich plasma injection. He acknowledged he will likely miss Opening Day, but he could also miss a lot more. Sean McAdam of MassLive today added that Gonzalez will visit a shoulder specialist next week to see if he needs surgery. Gonzalez said the surgery is “not season-ending in any way, in my opinion,” but it would be a blow to the Red Sox’ lineup if the left-handed pitching infielder is sidelined any longer.

Gonzalez, a right-handed hitter, suffered a shoulder injury in late 2025 and experienced pain again in January while preparing for spring training. He posted career-high offensive numbers for the Sox in 2025, hitting .305/.343/.483 and posting a 123 wRC+ in 341 plate appearances. His performance against right-handers was slightly below average (95 wRC+), but he definitely teed off against left-handers. In a platoon-leading 143 RBIs, Gonzalez hit seven of his nine home runs and posted a 162 wRC+, tied for 12th among batters with at least 100 RBIs against left-handers. Obviously the team will be hoping he avoids surgery, but with that kind of production, they’ll do whatever it takes to get Gonzalez back to full strength.

A few other injury updates from around the league:

  • angel right handed robert stevenson According to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register, he met live batters for the first time on Friday as he prepared for Opening Day. Stevenson said he obviously had “a little bit of work to do,” but added that he felt good physically and reached 95 MPH on his fastball (he averaged 96.4 MPH on his four-seamer last year). Due to Tommy John surgery and symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome, he was unable to play 10 innings in Los Angeles. In his final healthy season in 2023, Stevenson pitched 52 1/3 innings, posting an ERA of 3.10 and a strikeout rate well above 38.3%. When healthy, he should be factored into the late mix with fellow right-handers. ben joyceHe is currently rehabilitating his shoulder problem.
  • reds outfielder Blake Dunn According to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, he is scheduled to get an MRI on his left knee today. Dunn hyperextended his left knee while attempting a catch yesterday. The 27-year-old was a 15th-round draft pick of the Reds in 2021 and appeared in 49 big league games in 2024-25, but posted a wRC+ of just 63. He performed even better in Triple-A in 2025, hitting .291/.397/.401 with a 121 wRC+ and 24 stolen bases in 98 games. Currently in Cincinnati Will Benson, Dane Myersand spencer steer He is available as an outfield backup. A healthy Dunn will remain in Triple-A.
  • dodgers utility man tommy edman According to Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic, he took some light batting practice yesterday. If you continue to make progress, you could face higher speeds on your machine within a few days, but full improvement is still a few weeks away. Edman underwent surgery in November to address an ankle issue that had plagued him throughout the season. Manager Dave Roberts confirmed a few weeks ago that Edman would start the year on the injured list. This news doesn’t speed up his return, but in any case, the team wants Edman to be at full strength. He is entering the second year of a five-year, $74 million contract. He had an 81 wRC+ in 97 games in 2025, with his power decreasing while also striking out slightly less than in 2024.
