The NFL’s new league year is upon us, and with it, the legal tampering period for teams to negotiate pending free agents began on Monday.
The team not only negotiates contract agreements but also works on last-minute deals. One of these moves came from the Pittsburgh Steelers, who traded for Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr.

Last season, the Steelers made a similar move when they traded DK Metcalf. However, a few months later they traded rising star George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys.

The 2025 Pickens trade proved disastrous. Other than Metcalf, the Steelers have never had a true playmaking receiver. The offense has struggled when Metcalf has been suspended or opposing defenses have taken him out of their game plans.
This problem reflected what happened in 2024. The Steelers traded Diontae Johnson and entered the season with George Pickens as their only legitimate receiving threat. The absence of a reliable WR2 became apparent when Pickens missed time or the defense roughly neutralized him.

The Steelers now have two proven receivers. Pittman had a down year last season, but he is still only 28 years old and capable of playing at a high level. Now the question is: Have they finally solved the recipient’s problem?

The Steelers now have Metcalf, Pittman and third-year receiver Roman Wilson as their top three options. If the team can return to its track record of drafting productive receivers, Pittsburgh can finally stabilize its position group.
General manager Omar Khan has faced criticism from analysts and the Steelers’ fan base over the team’s wide receiver shortcomings. Especially after Pickens thrived in Dallas.
Questions at quarterback still remain, but the Steelers appear to be moving in the right direction after two years of subpar receiver talent.
