Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-Imagn Image Zoom Diallo had a career-high 26 points and nine rebounds and Hannes Steinbach had the fourth-most rebounds in program history as Washington rallied to a convincing 91-72 win over Southern California in Big Ten action Wednesday night in Seattle.
Steinbach scored 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, had a career-high 24 rebounds and set a Big Ten freshman record with 19 double-doubles. He surpassed the record set by former Ohio State standout Jared Sullinger (2010-11).
Quimari Peterson scored 13 points and Wesley Yates III added 11 for the Huskies (15-15, 7-12 Big Ten). The Huskies outscored the Trojans by as many as 21 points over the final 13-plus minutes.
Aaliyah Arenas had 19 points and seven rebounds, and Ezra Ausar had 17 points and 11 rebounds for USC (18-12, 7-12), which has lost its sixth straight game. Jacob Cofie and Jordan Marsh each added 14 points in the loss.
The Trojans played their first game Sunday since top player Chad Baker-Mazara was fired from the program.
Washington shot 48.1% from the field, including 7 of 30 3-pointers. The Huskies maintained a 46-37 rebounding advantage as they swept two games at USC this season after losing their previous 11 games.
The Trojans connected on 37.5% of their attempts and were 4 of 19 from behind the arc.
The Huskies led for 48 seconds in the first half, but Peterson’s 3-pointer and Yates’ driving layup tied the game at 52 with 13:18 left.
The Trojans countered with an Arenas basket seven seconds later before Washington began its dominant run.
It started with 10 points in a row. Diallo made the next first six and Yates drove in for a layup. Diallo then hit a jumper to give the Huskies an eight-point lead with 9:35 to go.
USC cut the deficit in half before Steinbach converted a 3-point play to give Washington a 67-60 lead with 7:21 left.
Moments later, Peterson hit a corner 3-pointer and Steinbach followed up his mistake to push the lead up to 11 points with 6:07 left.
The Trojans later got within seven before Washington’s Courtland Muldrew converted two 3-point plays during a 13-0 burst. The Huskies increased their lead to 17 points on Diallo’s dunk with 2:54 left, and Nikola Dzepina added a trey 38 seconds later to make it 85-65.
With the Trojans leading 43-40 at halftime, Arenas scored 13 points in the first half.
Steinbach recorded a landmark double-double in the first half with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
