The San Jose Earthquakes will look to repeat the red-hot success of their opening night and potentially debut a marquee offseason signing when they welcome Atlanta United on Saturday.

The Earthquakes (1-0-0, 3 points) won 3-0 against Sporting Kansas City on February 21, behind two goals from defenseman Daniel Mooney. San Jose held Kansas City to just one shot.

But the biggest draw for Saturday’s game will be Timo Werner. The former Germany national team star, 2021 UEFA Champions League winner and member of Chelsea FC arrived in the United States on Wednesday evening, almost a month after signing a contract with the Quakes until June 2028.

“I think he’s going to help us, and we’re here to help him,” Munie said of his new teammate on Thursday. “We want him to feel comfortable and confident, and I know he will feel confident in himself.”

Meanwhile, Atlanta United (0-1-0) lost 2-0 in its opening game against FC Cincinnati, hampering the return of coach Tata Martino. Martino, the club’s first manager in 2017-18 and a two-year MLS Cup winner, returned in the offseason after Ronnie Deilla was fired.

For a team with the second-worst record in MLS in 2025, there could be some growing pains early in the new season, Martino noted.

“I understand it’s still early in the season and we’re a team that’s building what we want to do. We’re going to have to have a learning experience,” Martino said through an interpreter on Thursday. “What we need to do is analyze what happened, but quickly turn the page.”

San Jose had lost to Atlanta in their previous four attempts. The last meeting between the two teams resulted in Atlanta winning 2-1 in Game 1 of the 2023 season.

Midfielder Tomas Jacob, defender Elias Baez and goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos all made their debuts for Atlanta after signing in the offseason. Cooper Sanchez also started and became the club’s youngest player to start the season opener (17 years, 332 days).
