Mandatory Credit: Brad Mills-Imagn Images Senior center Vince Iwuchukwu scored a career-high 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as host Georgetown bounced back late to snap its seventh straight loss with an 80-79 win over Providence in Washington on Saturday.
In a see-saw game, Kyvan Mulready recorded 12 points and 7 assists for the Hoyas (14-17, 6-14 Big East), who gave up a 12-point lead in the first half and made a comeback after falling behind by 7 points with 11:29 left in the second half.
Caleb Williams and Malik Mack each added 11 points to help former Providence coach Ed Cooley complete a regular season sweep for the team he led from 2011-23.
Jeremiah Williams added 10 points for Georgetown, which is tied for last place in the conference and will face sixth-seeded DePaul in the opening round of the Big East tournament Wednesday night in New York.
The Hoyas’ 10 second-half points, including two slam dunks by Iwuchukwu, were decisive as they turned a five-point deficit into a five-point lead, 80-75, with 2:32 left. Iwuchukwu’s dunk with 2 minutes, 32 seconds left became Georgetown’s final score.
The Friars had a chance to tie the game with 2.4 seconds left, but Jamie Jones, who finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds, made 1 of 2 free throws.
Jaylin Sellers had 21 points to lead Providence, 14-17, 7-13, which dropped its final two games and will face eighth-seeded Butler in the opening round of the conference tournament Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
Ryan Mela contributed 17 points for the Friars, who are playing amid reports that coach Kim English will be fired after the season. English went 47-51 in the three seasons following Cooley.
Stefan Vaaks scored 11 points and Oswin Erhunmwunse grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Friars hold a 38-25 edge on the boards.
Providence led for the first 10 minutes before Georgetown went on a 20-4 run highlighted by a drive, a tomahawk slam by Mulready and an alley-oop jam by Iwuchukwu.
When Caleb Williams capped the scoring with a 3-pointer with 4:49 left in the first half, the Hoyas took a 33-21 advantage just in time for their biggest play of the period.
Early in the second half, the Friars made six straight shots, including a pair of 3-pointers by Vaaks and a pair each by Mela and Sellers, as Providence took the lead.
Later, when Mela hit a triple on back-to-back possessions, he gave the Friars their largest lead of the night, 62-55, with 11:29 left.
