Former Jets linebacker Darron Lee jailed without bond on murder charge

A Tennessee judge denied bail for former New York Jets linebacker Darron Lee on Wednesday. Darron Lee is currently facing a first-degree murder charge after prosecutors say he brutally killed his girlfriend.

Hamilton County Criminal Court Judge Tori Smith made the ruling Feb. 5 after hearing testimony about the death of Gabriella Perpétuo. Mr. Lee is also accused of destroying and forging evidence.

What came out of court was pretty grim.

Detective Brian Lockhart of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office testified Wednesday that he was present during the autopsy. Preliminary investigation? Blunt force trauma homicide. They are still waiting for the official autopsy report.

According to an arrest affidavit, first responders showed up at a home in Ooltewah (a Chattanooga suburb) after receiving a call that CPR was in progress. When they arrived, Perpétuo was already dead.

What authorities discovered during the search was shocking. Perpétuo suffered several types of trauma, including a stab wound to the abdomen, a human bite mark on the shoulder, a large bruise on the head, a severely swollen black eye, and dried blood on his face and neck.

Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp explained more in court. Lockhart testified that Perpétuo suffered severe brain damage and a broken neck. There were additional stab wounds to her legs but no cuts to her pants. This appears to have been what she wore after being stabbed.

Police also found alcohol, drugs and a gun at the scene.

Mr. Lee was also injured. The affidavit included facial injuries, hand lacerations, chest wounds and blood inside the cell phone case.

Then there is evidence of cleaning. Crime scene investigators identified blood in several areas of the home that someone had attempted to clean up. They found cleaning supplies near the spot where tests confirmed blood stains, even though no blood was visible anymore.

“Mr. Lee was in a home with a woman who, for lack of a better term, was beaten to death,” Wamp said in court, opposing bond. “And the explanation he gave makes absolutely no sense.”

Wamp also said Lee is on probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in one county and a battery in another county. He is also on probation in Ohio on an attempted battery charge.

The case warrants the death penalty, but prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Public Defender Mike Little represented Lee at the hearing. He noted that bail is often set for first-degree murder defendants, even those with prior felonies. When asked by The Associated Press for comment, Little said it was too early for him to make any statement.

Mr. Lee’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 9.
