Florida State has developed a reputation as a road warrior.

The Seminoles (15-14, 8-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) enter Wednesday’s final road game of the season against Pitt on a four-game winning streak, their longest road streak since the 2018-19 season.

This is part of a larger surprising resurgence for Florida State, which has won eight of its last 11 games after starting ACC play 0-5.

The most recent road win was Saturday’s 80-71 victory at Georgia Tech. Robert McCray V led the way with 20 points, his third 20-point game in the last four games, but Thomas Bassong’s breakout game stole the show.

The French freshman tied her career high with 14 points and added a career-high 12 rebounds for her first double-double. He made 6 of 8 shots from the floor, including his only 3-pointer, and grabbed seven offensive rebounds, leading FSU to 18 total and a 44-34 rebounding edge.

“Thomas is usually one of our hardest-working players. It’s sometimes difficult for freshmen to stay poised and consistent, but Thomas has made really good progress this year,” Florida State coach Luke Lukes said. “… When Thomas is on the court, good things happen. We’re going to need that long-term.”

The Seminoles enter this week solidly in the ACC Tournament and could move up to a No. 7 seed.

Pitt, on the other hand, still has work to do to avoid being one of the bottom three teams and being eliminated from the tournament next week in Charlotte.

The Panthers (11-18, 4-12) enter the final week of the regular season in 15th place and last place in the ACC Tournament. Although they hold the same conference record, Pitt is tied by a goal against Notre Dame in a head-to-head matchup.

A win in either of the two games this week (Saturday’s game against Syracuse) would go a long way to securing a spot for the Panthers.

Pitt took a step in the right direction with a 72-56 win at Cal on Saturday. Leading scorer Cameron Cohen (12.9 points per game) led the way with 16 points, but Barry Dunning Jr. stepped up with 15 points and 12 boards, recording his first double-double since December 2.

“The guys stepped up and made big plays, big shots, big free throws,” Pitt coach Jeff Kapell said. “(Dunning) has completely bounced back in basketball. I’m really, really happy for our team, our guys.”

The Panthers are just 2-6 in home ACC play this season.
