Mandatory Credit: Thomas Shea-Imagn Image Sharpshooter Emanuel Sharp hit 5 of 10 3-point attempts in a 19-point outing as seventh-ranked Houston closed its home schedule with a 77-64 comeback victory over pesky Baylor on Wednesday.
The second-ranked Cougars (25-5, 13-4 Big 12), who maintained a one-game conference margin over third-ranked Texas Tech, took their first lead with 7:16 left in the game and then went on a 20-3 run to defeat the Bears (15-15, 5-12).
Houston’s Kingston Flemings scored a game-high 21 points with seven assists, and Milos Uzan had 12 points.
Baylor’s Tounde Yessoufou totaled 20 points and 12 rebounds and Caden Powell had 12 points and six rebounds. Cameron Carr (7 rebounds) and Obi Agbim each scored 11 points.
The Bears, who lost by 22 points to Houston at home on Jan. 10, led 14-5 less than five minutes into the rematch. Baylor made seven straight shots, and Carr sank his second trey from 30 feet above the key. Makes the margin 19-9.
Houston’s Joseph Tugler, a substitute, threw down a blistering dunk with 5:20 left in the first half and Flemings hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 29-23. Baylor coach Scott Drew called a timeout after Flemings’ layup cut the score to five.
Flemings’ one-handed drive slam through the lane and two free throws put the Cougars back on a 12-3 run to tie the score at 35-all at halftime.
As they did after the opening tipoff, the Bears went on a strong run in the second half, outscoring the home team 9-2 to take a 44-37 lead. But Sharp converted a four-point play with 16:31 left to make it a one-point game.
Baylor went up by four at the midway point of the second half, but the Cougars took their first lead on Sharp’s wing trey with 7:16 left.
Chase McCarty hit a 3-point play, Flemings hit a layup and Uzan went on a 13-0 run to give the Cougars the win, a 67-58 margin.
