Foster suffered the injury in the first half of No. 1 Duke’s 76-62 win over then-No. 17 North Carolina in the final game of the regular season on Saturday night. Scheyer said the junior guard underwent surgery Sunday morning.
Duke missed the quarterfinals and will play its opening game in the Atlantic Coast Conference in Charlotte on Thursday, and N.C. Foster will not play.
But Scheyer didn’t keep him out of the NCAA Tournament for the Blue Devils (29-2).
“He’s on the road to recovery,” Sheyer said. “In his mind, in our minds, we’re going to do everything we can in our mindset to keep moving forward, where we can give him the opportunity to come back when all is said and done. But he’s going to be out for the foreseeable amount of time here.”
Scheyer said Duke would need to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament for Foster to have a chance to play.
“Realistically, I think we should be in the Final Four,” said Scheier, who was named ACC Coach of the Year on Monday. “And is there an opportunity earlier? I’m not going to take it away right now, but I think it’s really hard to even imagine that scenario. But we’re not going to have him for the next few weeks, the next few weeks. … Let’s keep winning and give him a chance to join us.”
Duke will have a limited rotation in the ACC tournament with center Patrick Ngongba II out with a right foot injury. Cayden Boozer will likely join the starting lineup at point guard.
Foster appeared in all 31 regular season games, averaging 8.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 25.4 minutes per game. The field goal success rate is 44.2% and the 3-point shot success rate is 40.2%.
